The High School Health and Wellness Committee has organized a school wide challenge: Being Mindful for 60 seconds a day for both teachers and students is a great way to help everyone be better prepared for exams and help deal with end of year stresses. There are reminders posted throughout the school and some staff have made Essential Oils!
To help students get a little extra exercise, participating Northwood classes “trot” their turkey around the building in addition to their normal travels. Classes spotted trotting their turkey around by a "turkey hunter" get a ticket to be entered in the end-of-challenge drawing for a class popcorn party. 27 classes participating!
The High School Health & Wellness Leaders are promoting self-care this season. In addition, the High School has two non-curricular PLCs focused on Mindfulness for both Staff and Students
Thirteen Hilton Central staff competed in the 39th Annual Merkel/Steve Strong 5-Mile Apple Derby on Sunday, September 30th. The Village Elementary Staff took time to celebrate the holidays with a healthy cookie exchange. A great way to celebrate the season while promoting wellness!!
The District’s Health and Wellness Committee will continue to offer cross training classes at the High School both before and after school, free of charge, after holiday break. This is great way to start 2018!
Class description:
“Classes will be 1 hour in length and consist of high intensity, constantly varied, functional movement. Workouts are scaled to the individual and can be modified to fit any current level of fitness. Safe mechanics are instructed before anyone picks up a barbell and mobility is stressed for all who join. Workouts will always have some combination of gymnastic, weight, and metabolic training. If you have a body, you are an athlete!”
Here are what some of those participating have to say...
"Despite the fact that I feel like my legs are going to give out when I walk down stairs (we have a lot of them) I feel energized.."
"I was surprised at how much more energy I had during the day after the morning workout"
**Classes will be held Monday 4-5pm, Tuesday 5-6am, Wednesday 2:30-3:30pm and 3:30-4:30pm and Thursdays from 5-6am in the High School first floor weightroom! Login to Google Classroom and signup with the code: 75wjxo
Step 1: Hang your Arctic Challenge Alphabet poster somewhere you can see it.
Step 2: Place your envelope of Arctic animal cards near by.
Step 3: Choose a card.
Step 4: Exercise your way, letter by letter, through the name of the animal card you selected *
Step 5: Congratulate yourself for doing something good for your body and mind!
* Each letter of the alphabet has an exercise next to it. For each letter, you do the exercise. I did not put a specific number of reps/minutes next to each exercise because this will be different for everyone’s ability. My goal is to get you moving. Modify if needed but keep on moving! There are so many great health benefits to exercise.
December's challenge at HHS is taking extra special care of YOURSELF!! The holidays can make people take on more than usual so this month we would like you to make sure you take time for YOU! On each day write something that you did for yourself. Some examples could be taking a walk, saying "no", drinking extra water, meditating, enjoying a special treat guilt free, taking a bath, going to the gym, reading a book, watching a movie, etc. Just make sure that you are doing for YOU!!
The Fitness and Wellness Committee representatives of Northwood Elementary have challenged the staff to make simple changes to help their routine. Over 65 members are currently participating in the "Water Challenge." This week's challenge is to drink 16 ounces of water in the morning FIRST THING before you get started with your day.
Water in the Morning:
1. Drinking water on an empty stomach in the morning purifies the colon and allows for better absorption of nutrients in your system.
2. To help with weight loss, drinking at least 16 oz. of water in the morning can boost your metabolism by up to 24%.
3. Water in the morning hydrates your cells at a superior rate after hours of fasting (sleeping). The rush of hydration to the cells helps the production of blood and muscle cells.
4. The high dosages of water help to purge the system of toxins through the bowels and will leave you with glowing skin.
5. It helps to flush and balance your lymphatic system which leads to increased immunity, helping you fight a variety of illnesses (Laura Bell)
Another set of challenges are coming up in the next few weeks!
Yoga classes are being offered to all district members throughout 2017-2018. The first round of classes ends in November, but be sure to watch your emails and this site to see more yoga opportunities soon! -Sponsored by the District Wellness Committee.

The date was postponed, but that is not stopping some staff members. It has been decided that some will still participate in Corporate Challenge this year and represent Hilton. It is July 11th. If you are interested please contact Jeff Nager and he will help get you registered and be able to give you more details.
Whether you are going to run, jog, or walk the corporate challenge - or possibly not even going - many staff members at Village Elementary commit to a fitness challenge. In the challenge, participants follow and track their fitness activity on a monthly calendar.
Each year, hundreds of people from around the Rochester area and beyond participate in a 100-mile Ride for Missing Children to raise awareness for missing and exploited children in support of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The ride passes schools around the county, making several stops along the way at designated schools. This year’s ride was Friday, May 19, and all five Hilton schools were on the route! While 100 miles may seem like a lot, a number of Hilton staff committed to this ride. Congratulations to all!
<-- Video. Students from the class of 2017 committed their college sports teams. From division I to division III, from wrestling to bowling, students are furthering their fitness and serving as role models for underclassmen.
This year students will be able to bring their own water bottles and get cleaned filtered water. Fill stations were installed to help shrink our carbon footprint and ultimately make students and staff consider the healthy alternative to coffee, pop, and energy drinks.
The committee at the high school set up a staff lounge wellness area. It is a space block off for privacy, and contains exercise balls, foam rollers, yoga blocks, massage balls and some educational posters that will help promote stretching and rolling. It is new this year, so be sure to take advantage of the area!
<--- Video. Each year, the community comes together to dispense healthy local produce and food. If you want to be involved in this program, please contact one of your District Fitness and Wellness Committee representatives.
The 37th annual Apple Derby Run was held on Saturday, October 1, 2016. The District Fitness and Wellness Committee registered a team of Hilton employees and ran a great race. Special thanks to Julie Norris for coordinating the team. Be sure to get involved each year during the Apple Fest.
