Something we use every day is the internet and it is changing right now. Net Neutrality is something that was defined as the requirement that internet providers should or must treat all internet data the same. Which many people fought for when Obama was in power.
The last administration had a different FCC chairman than the current chairman. Ajit Pai, the current chairman was appointed this year. Prior to the new changes made in August, Net Neutrality was known that internet providers could not block certain websites or impose limits on where they were going and what they were doing on the internet.
If newly proposed changes occur, the new plan will limit your internet abilities. Recently, Ajit Pai, has proposed a new plan. In the summer of 2017 Obama’s plan was repealed so right now Net Neutrality is in a weird place. Under President Trump Net Neutrality will be turned in the complete opposite direction. This means that internet providers such as Frontier, Spectrum, and many more will now be able to completely block some websites because they don’t own them or because they don’t like the company who owns them. This means the the consumer who uses internet (everyone who has a phone or computer) will be blocked based on their provider’s preferences, or charged extra for the ability to access those sites.
Take this as an example, you are driving down a four lane highway and the highway is owned by an internet provider. The lane you are driving in is the slow lane. The lane next to you the medium lane, in this lane cars are going at regular speeds at which they paid a small fee to be able to drive in, the next lane over is the fast lane, and only people who have paid special amount of money can use the fast lane. Finally the farthest lane over is the only lane where there are no cars because the owner of the highway has completely blocked this lane off. This example is basically what internet usage would be like under the new proposed Net Neutrality.
Many people work online such as people who make content on Youtube, Online websites, ect.. These small business and individuals whose jobs are on the internet under this new proposal could have their jobs ruined. This is just another perspective to consider, imagine if your job was halted becuase of such a large overhaul of policy, policy that takes individual rights away, imagine how life altering this could be for some. That is what is going to happen if this new Net Neutrality policy goes into effect.
Net Neutrality is a big issue that is not being covered as much as maybe it should be. WIth our recent administration calling media outlets into question, rattling off “fake news” to information, even facts, that don’t paint the best picture, is damaging. Facts are important, and the facts in the case of Net Neutrality are clear, your rights are about to be taken away. Is that something you want?
