Doctor Green is the new principal at Hilton High School. Green comes to Hilton from from Greece Odyssey where he worked as a the school principal. Cadet Gazette writers Karly Suhr and Adam Sheelar sat down with Dr. Green for a chance to get to know him and allow the entire student body to as well.
It was early in November, and both Karly and I felt nervous walking into the main office. We both felt intimidated since we had never interviewed someone so high up the chain of command before. However, before we knew it we were invested into the interview. We began with the most basic question of all, “Why Hilton?” this question was met with a variety of answers, most of which boiled down to the fact that Dr. Green sees himself as a family man and he was looking for his “forever home.” Hilton allowed him to settle in next to his brother offering him a place where he could raise his children - both of whom attend Quest Elementary school. But what exactly does Dr.Green like about Hilton? He loves everything! Coming from a school with a larger age range, Greece Odyssey houses grades 6-12, he has come to enjoy focusing on a strictly high school population. He is a huge fan of the IB program, a staple of Hilton High School, Hilton's athletic programs, which we know are very important to our school, as well as the plethora of extracurricular activities HHS has to offer.
It's always interesting to hear the perspective of someone who is new to our school, especially when it comes to the subject of our IB program, but Dr. Green is not a stranger to IB as Greece Odyssey is in the process of becoming an IB school also. When it comes to IB he says, “and it [IB authentication] was literally a life changing experience…” he goes on to list the reasons, one of which is the freedom that the grading and criteria gives to the educators. However he hasn't always wanted to be a administrator/educator.
Dr. Green initially wanted to pursue a career in business. He was very inspired by the connection he could make to real life and took many business classes throughout his high school career. On the other hand, he was not inspired by Spanish class as he failed the exam in 1998 and was tutored by a Spanish teacher from Hilton, Mrs. Ariola. Obviously Dr. Green was always destined for Hilton.
Dr. Green went to college as a business major and began to work in sales, but he did not find passion in this career. Dr. Green says, “and I started to realize that really wasn’t something I got fulfillment out of.” He then looked to his idols and realized they all bared semblance to educators. He was then led to the career of an administrator and fell in love with the profession. He enjoyed “the idea of working with adults and being able to impact change on a bigger level.”
This career allowed him to “be able to still work with children, but also work with adults to broaden the ability to have an impact.”
The final question we had for Dr. Green was his goal for his time here at Hilton High School. Focusing on the long term, Dr. Green wished “to build the collective capacity of others” and build trusting relationships with both students and adults in the Hilton community. We hope to see this goal achieved and wish Dr. Green the best of luck in this new position.
