Grading
Grading for Graduate Students
A = Superior Achievement
B = Satisfactorily demonstrated potentiality for professional achievement in field of study
C = Passed the course but did not do work indicative of potential for professional achievement in field of study
F = Fail
S = Satisfactory (achievement at grade B level or better)
Does not count in computing the GPA
U = Unsatisfactory
Students receive neither units nor degree credit for a grade of U
I = Incomplete (see below)
IP = In Progress
For courses that extend over more than one term. An IP is assigned at the end of the first term. When the final term has been completed the IP designation will be replaced with a letter grades.
DR = Deferred Report
A Deferred Report (DR) grade may be assigned when the when the student’s work is complete but the instructor cannot assign a grade because of disciplinary proceedings or other problems. For graduate students, the Division of Graduate Education's Dean sets a deadline by which the DR lapses to an F if the issue is not resolved or a grade is not assigned. The DR is changed to a grade, or perhaps to an incomplete, when the instructor provides written confirmation that the situation is resolved. The DR grade is not included in determining the grade-point average.
NR = No Report (Instructor forgot to submit the grades on time)
Incomplete Grades
You may request an incomplete when your work is of passing quality but is incomplete for good reason. This is to be done before the final exam or paper is due and it is at the at the instructor’s discretion whether or not to assign an “I” grade. It is the student’s responsibility to discuss with the instructor the possibility of receiving an Incomplete as opposed to a nonpassing grade. Once an “I” grade is entered, the units are not counted in that particular quarter and remains on the transcript along with the passing grade students may later receive for the course.
Once you have submitted the completed the remaining work for the class, the instructor will submit a petition to remove the Incomplete. The remaining work must be submitted before the end of the next academic quarter (Week 10) in which you are registered and enrolled or the grade will automatically lapse to an “F” if the course was taken for a letter grade or "U" if the course was taken on S/U basis.
