Grading for Graduate Students

From the UCLA General Catalog

Incomplete Grades

You may request an incomplete when your work is of passing quality but is incomplete for good reason. This is to be done before the final exam or paper is due and it is at the at the instructor’s discretion whether or not to assign an “I” grade. It is the student’s responsibility to discuss with the instructor the possibility of receiving an Incomplete as opposed to a nonpassing grade. Once an “I” grade is entered, the units are not counted in that particular quarter and remains on the transcript along with the passing grade students may later receive for the course.

Once you have submitted the completed the remaining work for the class, the instructor will submit a petition to remove the Incomplete. The remaining work must be submitted before the end of the next academic quarter (Week 10)  in which you are registered and enrolled or the grade will automatically lapse to an “F” if the course was taken for a letter grade or "U" if the course was taken on S/U basis.
