Enrolling

Student Responsibility

A registered student's Study List of enrolled courses becomes official at midnight on Friday of the second week of each quarter. Students are responsible for all courses and grading basis, as listed on MyUCLA, and cannot receive credit for courses not listed. Errors or omissions should be corrected before instruction ends (end of Week 10). Study Lists should be checked after all enrollment transactions.

When planning courses for a term, students are responsible for avoiding class conflicts and avoiding conflicting or multiple same-day final examinations. See "Final Examination Policies on UCLA's Registrar's website.

When to Enroll

Each student is given their own enrollment appointment time determined by the Registrar's Office. This can be found on MyUCLA. You may only enroll for classes during your appointed time. A tutorial on how to view enrollment appointments is available on MyUCLA.

Finalizing Your Study List

Students have until Friday of the second week of each quarter to make any changes to their Study List without financial penalty. For example, the Friday of the second week of Fall 2020 is October 16. These changes include adding/dropping courses, and changing grading basis (letter grade, satisfactory/unsatisfactory, and changing variable units). During Weeks 3 to 10 any changes will result in a fee posted to the BruinBill. Changes made after Week 10 require an enrollment petition and Department memo, which are subject to approval by the Division of Graduate Education's Dean.

Units

Students must be enrolled in at least 8 units to be considered full-time. The Department requires all students to enroll in a minimum of 12 units every quarter. If you are receiving an award, please check back with your funding agency or funding unit to find out if they have a minimum unit requirement to keep your award. If you are offered a Graduate Student Researcher or Academic Student Employee position, you must enroll in 12 units to remain eligible for the position.

Graduate students are limited to enroll in a maximum of 22 units per quarter. Students who wish to exceed the 22-unit limit for a particular quarter will need to have an approved department petition signed by their primary advisor/committee Chair and the Vice Chair of Graduate Studies. Students will need to contact the Graduate Advisor to initiate the petition and provide the following information: 1) The requested total number of units, and 2) a brief explanation on why they need to exceed the limit (ex: course is only offered once a year or once every other year, want or need to take a particular course, etc.). If the department petition is approved, the Graduate Advisor will then enter the total number of units requested in MyUCLA to allow excess unit enrollment for a student up to that amount.

Grading Basis

For students completing the M.A. program en route to the Ph.D., courses to complete the minimum unit requirement for the M.A must be taken for a letter grade. It is each student's responsibility to check their Study List after they enroll to ensure that their courses taken for the intended grading basis. Changes to grading basis can be made on MyUCLA until the end of Week 10 each quarter. If after Week 10, a special petition, instructor letter, and Department memo is required to request a grading basis change. This petition is reviewed by the Division of Graduate Education and is not guaranteed to be approved.

Note: Working with the Class Planner does not enroll or drop any courses.

Possible Issues When Attempting to Enroll

If you cannot enroll in a class, it could be for one or more of the following reasons:

"The course I want is full! What do I do?"

If you find that a course you wanted to take is full and are worried that you will not be able to enroll, please check up on that particular course periodically, even up until the second week of the respective quarter, as space will highly likely open up. Some students enroll in more courses than they actually need in an attempt to "save a seat" or are "shopping for classes". As a result, they end up dropping the excess courses during the first and second week of class thus freeing up space. Please note there is nothing we can do to prevent this from happening as graduate students have a unit limit of 22 units. If you plan to enroll in 18+ units to “save a seat” or "shop for classes", we ask that you consider this information when you enroll and try to refrain from this practice to be fair to your fellow students.

If you are on the waitlist, your waitlist number indicates your position. If an enrolled student drops the course, you’ll be moved up. If you were #1 on the waitlist, you will be automatically enrolled.

If the course is a required core seminar for your subfield or an interest group, please send an email to the instructor and Graduate Advisor as it may be possible to increase the enrollment cap, allowing you to enroll.
