Important Rules
Must complete Practicum I & II hours during those courses
At least 50 of your observation hours must be completed during Practicum l & ll
Extra observation hours may count toward “Other” category and used at the end of Practicum ll
What Counts as an Observation?
Option A: Watch a professional interpreter doing live interpreting
You must ask them ahead of time for permission to observe
Pre + post discussion counts
Example:
30 min prep (ex. email/text, drive to find the location the day before) + 1 hr observe + 30 min debrief = 2 hours
Option B: Watch a recording of a professional interpreter
Maximum 5 hours (See provided recordings here)
Option C: The Sorenson Synergy Program
Minimum of 5 hours

Observing your mentor
Observing professional interpreters
Observing interpreters recommended by your mentor
Observing interpreters in classes where you are enrolled as a student
Watching your teammate while teaming an assignment
Observing an interpreter without asking their permission
Skipping a requested pre- or post-discussion
Observing peers, classmates, or student interpreters (e.g., DAS)
