The Berkner High School Symphonic Band I was presented an invitation to perform at the 73rd annual Midwest Clinic, held from December 18-21, 2019, at McCormick Place West in Chicago, Illinois.
Traditionally, there are 50+ high school bands that submit recordings to be considered from across the nation. Only five high school bands nationwide were extended invitations.
Friday’s big announcement is a band program-wide announcement, as everyone will have an opportunity to audition at the end of this year for the Midwest Band. Additionally, we are looking to expand our instrumentation for the Varsity Band next Fall, to extend this rare performance opportunity to more students!

How do I audition for the Berkner 2019 Midwest Band?
- Listen to the audition excerpt by J.S. Bach as performed by Itzhak Perlman in 1978 on solo violin.
- Work to match his style, articulation, phrasing and dynamic contrast
- Your audition excerpt begins at 8:07
- Print your audition excerpt attached below.
- Work up the audition etude and chromatic scale as listed.
- Print and sign the attached "Berkner 2019 Midwest Band Agreement"
- Sign up for your audition time with Mr. Schayot in "Sign-up Genius" below. Auditions occur May 20 through May 23. Please include your parents in this, as many audition times are before or after school. YOU are responsible for remembering what time you select, and arriving 20 minutes early... warmed up. All auditions occur in Mr. Schayot's office in the Berkner Band Hall.
- Pay your $135 Midwest Retreat fee BEFORE your audition.
You can pay online,
OR bring a check for $135 payable to "BABC" to your audition. You will not be allowed to audition without paying the fee in advance.
Your Midwest Retreat Fee will be applied towards your 2019 Berkner Band Fees if you are not selected for the Berkner 2019 Midwest Band.
