Amy Mayes is an Associate Band Director at L.V. Berkner High School. Her responsibilities include conducting the Symphonic Band II, co-conducting the Philharmonic Orchestra, assisting with the marching band and other concert bands, and teaching sixth-grade beginner band classes at elementary campuses within the Berkner cluster.

Before joining the Berkner Band program, Ms. Mayes served as an Assistant Band Director for Union Public Schools in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During her four years with the Union Bands program, she worked with students at all levels and served as the 7th Grade Coordinator, conductor of the UHS Concert Winds, and associate conductor for the UHS Wind Ensemble for two years. She also served as the Woodwind Coordinator for the Renegade Regiment, Union’s nationally competitive HS marching band, who were selected as a BOA Grand Nationals Finalist in 2017 and 2019. Prior to teaching at Union, Ms. Mayes worked in Mesquite ISD for two years, teaching middle school and high school students within the North Mesquite and West Mesquite clusters.

Ms. Mayes holds Bachelor’s degrees in Music Education and Clarinet Performance, as well as a Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of Arkansas. While at the U of A, she performed in many of the university’s ensembles, including the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, New Music Ensemble, Razorback Marching Band, and numerous chamber groups. Throughout her time in Northwest Arkansas, Ms. Mayes was also very active in the public school classrooms, serving as an adjunct teacher and private lesson teacher for several of the school districts in the area.

Ms. Mayes is thrilled to be returning home to the North Texas area and to be joining the Berkner Band staff. She believes it is the ultimate privilege to be able to use music as a medium to empower students to grow into the best versions of themselves, and she is excited to be able to work with such an amazing group of colleagues and students.
