Tudor History is for you if you like studying the Tudor Monarchs and their impact on the development of Britain as we know it. Thrown into the mix is German Reformation History and Witchcraft.
In brief... We follow the Edexcel specification. Paper 1, England; Authority, Nation and Religion 1509-1603 and Paper 2, Luther and the German Reformation c1515-1555 are your first year papers. In Paper 1 you will study 4 key themes: Monarchy and government; Religious changes; State control and popular resistance and finally Economic, social and cultural change. You will then address an historical controversy as to whether there was a crisis in government in the last years of Elizabeth's reign. In Paper 2 you will address 4 key topics: Conditions in early 16th Century Germany, Luther's early challenge to the Catholic Church, The development of Lutheranism and finally the Spread and survival of Lutheranism. Paper 3, The witch craze in Britain, Europe and North America c1580-c1750, is taught in the second year. You will study 5 depth topics: The North Berwick witches in Scotland, 1590-91 and the aftermath to 1597, The Lancashire witches of 1604-13, The Great Witch-Hunt in Bamberg, Germany, 1623-32, Matthew Hopkins and the East Anglian witch craze, 1645-47 and finally Cotton Mather and the Salem witch hunt, 1692-93. You will then look at 2 breadth topics: Changing Attitudes to witchcraft in Britain and The wider intellectual context, which focus on changes over time. There is also a coursework option, which returns to the themes found in Paper 1. Papers 1 and 3 are worth 30% of your final mark. Paper 2 and your coursework are worth 20% each.
