Italy was forced together by war in 1870. A disunified "nation" that existed at the bottom of the European pecking order. A weak Liberal state attempted to force Italy into the modern world, failed, and foolishly dragged the nation into the First World War. Leaving the War in a worse state than when they entered, Italians fell for the whims of Benito Mussolini. He duped Italians into a propagandistic sham state, dragged them into the Second World War, and failed so badly his own people killed him for it and swapped sides. Democracy returns to Italy in 1946.
