Elm Creek School’s UNESCO Committee

WHO: This committee is open to all grade 6 – 12 students who wish to participate.

WHAT: We strive to make the world a better place through actions and activities, such as fundraisers, awareness campaigns, and social justice projects. As well, we offer members opportunities to attend field trips and special events to learn more about our world.

WHY: To promote a culture of peace in our local and global community!

Elementary UNESCO

The Elementary UNESCO Committee is led by student members in Grade 4-6. They plan some of their own social justice events and causes that they would like to support. In the past they have planned a craft sale, take action events and field trips to support local causes such as the Carman & Area Christmas Cheer Board. They have also assisted the Grade 7-12 UNESCO Committee by making posters to promote events, etc. The younger students in Kindergarten-Grade Two are invited to join us when we are doing hands on activities such as packing shoe boxes for Samaritan’s Purse.

ELM CREEK SCHOOL ACHIEVES OFFICIAL UNESCO MEMBERSHIP

On Thursday, March 12th, 2020, Elm Creek School recognized their official “MEMBER” status as part of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet) with a special school celebration!

The school is now officially part of an international network of more than 11,000 member schools in 182 countries, whose mandate is to work together on international understanding, intercultural awareness, sustainable development, quality educational practices, and peace and human rights.

The UNESCO “Membership Celebration”, held in the school’s gym, included:

• The unveiling of Elm Creek School’s official membership certificate from the UNESCO ASPnet headquarters in Paris, France.

• Sharing of a special video highlighting UNESCO projects and activities at Elm Creek School. UNESCO Council members, Kaley D and Olivia H., created the video.

• The unveiling of our new UNESCO member school sign, soon to be displayed at the outside entrance of the school.

• Sharing of the school’s new UNESCO member flag.

• Special welcome videos by UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet) officials: Mrs. Linda Connor (Provincial Coordinator) and Mrs. Isabelle LeVert-Chiasson (National Coordinator).

• Highlights about a couple of recent projects.

• A celebratory cake for all students, staff and guests to enjoy.

A special “thank you” to all of our UNESCO COUNCIL members, along with our student body and school staff, for their efforts in striving to “make the world a better place”!
