In line with the university’s dedication to sustainable innovation, a recent study entitled "Chitosan-Based Biodegradable Films from the Shell Waste of Penaeus monodon (Fabricius, 1798) and Scylla olivacea (Herbst, 1796) as an Alternative to Conventional Packaging for Aquaculture Products" presents an eco-friendly approach to addressing both plastic pollution and seafood waste.....
In pursuit of Sustainable Development Goal 12, Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) empowers communities and enterprises to embrace sustainable production and resource efficiency. Through initiatives such as MSU-IIT ILIGANiCE’s Innovative Business Recovery (IBR) Plans for MSMEs, Standardizing Equipment Utilization in Taro Chips Processing, and Reinventing LAKUB: A Technology Training on Seasoning, Preservation, and Coloring, the university promotes eco-conscious innovation and responsible entrepreneurship—paving the way for greener, more resilient local industries.
MSU-IIT takes decisive action towards a sustainable future! This campus waste tracking report, meticulously compiled by our Environmental Engineering students, provides critical insights into our progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12). By rigorously tracking organic, inorganic, and single-use plastic waste across all colleges and offices, we are not just measuring our impact, but actively identifying opportunities for improvement. This data-driven approach, informed by Republic Act No. 9003 and House Bill No. 9147, empowers us to strengthen our commitment to responsible consumption and production, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable campus and a brighter future for the Philippines.
The MSU-IIT Sustainability Report 2024 underscores Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible campus governance. Far more than a compilation of data, this report stands as a testament to the Institute’s proactive stance in confronting the urgent challenges of climate change, resource scarcity, and ecological degradation. Through comprehensive data gathering and rigorous analysis, the report presents clear insights into key sustainability areas, including waste management, energy and water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and various initiatives aimed at reducing the Institute’s overall carbon footprint.
A defining strength of this year’s report is the active involvement of MSU-IIT students—particularly those from environmental engineering and allied programs—who played a pivotal role in data collection, monitoring, and field assessments. Their participation not only enhances the accuracy and depth of this report but also strengthens the Institute’s mission to provide experiential, hands-on learning that empowers future engineers, scientists, and leaders to design sustainable, real-world solutions.
Aligned with national environmental regulations and global sustainability frameworks, MSU-IIT continues to demonstrate accountability, innovation, and foresight. The Institute persistently explores and implements forward-looking practices such as renewable energy integration, green campus initiatives, improved waste reduction strategies, and resource conservation technologies to further lessen its ecological impact.
Ultimately, the MSU-IIT Sustainability Report 2024 serves as both a benchmark of the Institute’s progress and a strategic roadmap for future action. It reflects a collective responsibility and determination to cultivate a deeply rooted culture of sustainability—one that safeguards the present and boldly shapes a more resilient, environmentally conscious future for generations to come.
