How to facilitate learning in Breakout Rooms
Breakout Rooms allow for meeting hosts to create separate rooms for attendees to communication, differentiate, and collaborate. Zoom allows for the host to create breakout rooms manually or automatically.
Breakout Rooms Features:
Screen Sharing - attendees if feature is turned on
Host & Co-Host can automatically share screen in any breakout room.
Participant features such as raise hand, go slower, etc.
Breakout Rooms have full audio and video capabilities
Host can move in and out of any break out room
Breakout Rooms can be recorded - If the meeting is being cloud recorded, it will only record the main room, regardless of what room the meeting host is in. If local recording is being used, it will record the room the participant who is recording is in. Multiple participants can record locally if the Host has allowed it prior to entering the breakout room.

Breakout Rooms are a great way for you to virtually meet with small groups of students or allow students to meet together for discussions and/or projects with the ability for you to randomly pop into each breakout room.
A few management tips for using breakout rooms with students:
Make a plan- Breakout Rooms allow you to either randomly assign students to breakout rooms or to assign students to breakout rooms during the meeting .
Don't reinvent the wheel-Use the same types of rules you used when students are in groups in the classroom and give breakout room members different jobs. For example, if you are having students read and discuss an article, have one student be the person who is screen sharing so they can all look at the same article and discuss while reading. If having students work on a math problem, have one student be the "writer" and they will screen share the whiteboard and write.
Broadcast messages to all Breakout Rooms- If you have a message for the whole class, instead of popping into each breakout room, you can broadcast a message to all students.
Warn students before the breakout rooms will close- When you want students back in the main room, set up the feature that will notify students that they have X amount of time before the breakout room closes. This allows students to finish sharing their thoughts before joining the main room.
Tips To Remember
Turn on Chime to receive alert when attendees enter Zoom meeting
Open Participants and Chat when you enter meeting (Select Participants and Chat-windows will appear to the right)
Before sending students to a breakout room, turn on "all participants can screen share" if you want them to discuss a document or use the whiteboard feature (Select the arrow next to share screen, and select advance sharing options)
