Note: This course meets the physical education and comprehensive health requirements for a South Carolina high school diploma.
Students will develop motor skills and movement patterns through familiar and novel instructional units, while being empowered to analyze and improve their own performance. They will learn to participate in various physical activities, understand the cultural significance of sports and dance, and assume leadership roles in promoting safe practices, ultimately fostering a lifelong commitment to health-enhancing physical fitness. In the comprehensive health component, students will learn to promote health and prevent disease by analyzing influences on health behaviors, accessing valid health information and services, using interpersonal communication and decision-making skills, setting goals, practicing health-enhancing behaviors, and advocating for personal, family, and community health.
Prerequisites: PE 1 or JROTC 1
Students enrolled in Physical Education 2 will use previously learned skills to perform in sports-related activities at an advanced level. Participation in individual and team sports will be emphasized. Students will be exposed to a variety of conditioning practices that will develop their athletic ability, as well as create healthy practices for a lifetime of wellness. Students learn the benefits of weight training and its effects on the body and psyche. Students will learn to identify basic muscle groups and understand how proper weight training influences those muscles. All students will be able to lift safely and use proper lifting and spotting techniques. They will also develop an understanding of the importance of weightlifting as a lifetime fitness activity.
Prerequisites: PE 2
Students use previously learned skills and knowledge to perform advanced lifting moves. Individual data is kept charting muscular growth and personal development. Drills are included for improving agility, endurance, and flexibility. Individual and dual sports will also be a part of this course and will be used as an incentive for students who meet their daily and weekly performance goals.
Prerequisites: PE 3
This course aims to enhance students' physical fitness and competency in at least one lifetime activity, following South Carolina Physical Education Standards. Students will create a training plan for an external physical activity event, assess their fitness level, and develop a personalized fitness and nutrition program. Additionally, the course will focus on inclusive strategies for individuals with diverse backgrounds and abilities, and it is an elective for high school students who have completed their PE graduation requirement.
Prerequisites: PE 4
Physical Education 5 is an advanced weight training course. This course will stress mastering the fundamental skills of weight training. It is designed to build upon student knowledge of weight training techniques, plyometrics, and improving students’ physical fitness. Students will demonstrate progression in technique and fitness as measured in prerequisite courses. Individual and dual sports will also be a part of this course and will be used as an incentive for students who meet their daily and weekly performance goals.
Prerequisites: PE 5
This course will stress mastery of fundamental skills of advanced weight training. It is designed to build upon student knowledge of weight training techniques, plyometrics, and improving students’ physical fitness. Students will demonstrate progression in technique and fitness as measured in prerequisite courses. Students use skills and knowledge from PE 5 to perform advanced lifting moves focused on improving athletic performance in a specific sport. Individual data is kept charting muscular growth and personal development.
Prerequisite: PE 6
This course adds weight training and exercise to previously learned knowledge. Students will understand weight lifting exercises and the parts of the body the exercises train. Conditioning exercises and core exercises will be included. Drills are included for improving agility, endurance, and flexibility. Individual and dual sports will also be a part of this course and will be used as an incentive for students who meet their daily and weekly performance goals.
Prerequisite: PE 7
Uses previously learned skills about weight training and exercise to advance knowledge in weight lifting. Students will understand weight lifting exercises and the parts of the body the exercises train.
