Horry County Schools (HCS) and (HGTC) collaborated to develop the Advanced Technical Scholars Welding and Cyber Security programs. The welding program is designed for high school seniors and consists of twelve semester hours in the fall and twelve semester hours in the spring. Horry County Schools, following the district dual enrollment guidelines, will cover the tuition costs for the fall and spring semesters for those students enrolled in the program. Students who wish to develop their skills further can complete an additional ten semester hours during the summer session and receive an Advanced Welding Technologies Certification from HGTC, but the additional summer session tuition is not covered by HCS. The cyber security program is a 2 year virtual program designed for students starting their 3rd year of high school. For more information see your school counselor.
Through an agreement with Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC), dual-enrollment (also called PACE) courses are available for eligible students to earn both high school and college credit. These courses will be taught at the Grand Strand campus of HGTC, and students are responsible for their own transportation. In order to be eligible for dual enrollment classes, students must be in their 3rd year of high school and meet application deadlines and requirements. Failure to complete these courses with a “C” or better may result in a lower overall GPA and ineligibility or loss of financial aid later in college. In addition, PACE grades will appear on the student’s college transcript and are important to their overall college GPA. Horry County Schools may pay the cost of tuition and textbooks if a student has met the guidelines, and if the student has exhausted their course options at the high school. If Myrtle Beach High School offers an equivalent course (i.e. AP level of a course), the district will not pay for the course. A list of MBH AP courses and their equivalent are below.
