This course offers a study of literary genres as the English 1 standards are covered (novel, short story, poetry, nonfiction, and drama). Students develop previously learned reading and writing skills, and improve vocabulary and research skills gained in previous English courses. Students will write in many forms, including the HCS 4 writing domains: argument, narrative, expository, and analysis. Teacher selected readings are a part of this course. Self-selected readings may also be a part of this course. In addition, this course will incorporate a variety of learning assessments. The course primarily focuses on World Literature.

This is a college-preparatory course surveying American Literature. Students write for a variety of purposes, complete a research paper, and develop public speaking skills. Vocabulary skills and knowledge are also extended. Students add to their portfolios to build upon the work from previous English classes.

This course focuses on British Literature. Students write for a variety of purposes and develop public speaking skills. Vocabulary skills are also extended. Students continue to add to their writing portfolios.

Students read and write literary analysis of literary classics (non-fiction and rhetoric). Students must possess strong skills in analytical reading and written expression. Most in-class writing assignments are timed. Students are required to take the AP English Language and Composition examination.
