During registration, all students complete a Home Language Survey. Students that indicate any language other than English during their home language survey will be screened using ACCESS/WIDA. Students are placed in ESOL classes based on WIDA results.
The focus of this multilanguage class is to instruct newcomers to acquire the survival/basic English skills and vocabulary needed to meet the everyday requirements of their new environment. This course teaches language acquisition that includes intensive instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in order to build literacy skills essential to academic success.
Requirements: Students will be placed based on their current English Learning Proficiency level 1-6.
The focus of the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes is to provide Multilingual Learners with a language focused environment to develop the academic language necessary to demonstrate complex thinking and learning across the disciplines. Students learn to recognize and use language explicitly to the task in the four domains of reading, writing, speaking and listening through engaging interactions with teachers and peers. These courses focus on helping students develop the academic language proficiency needed to be able to learn content knowledge, skills, and processes and use language to communicate proficiently in mainstream courses.
