Letter of Recommendation

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

WHS students applying to private universities, out-of-state universities, or scholarships may need a letter of recommendation from their counselor. Due to the overwhelming number of requests received every year, each student must carefully read and follow the deadline policy and steps outlined below. Please note that counselors will not write letters for summer or external programs, for-profit organizations, or any programs unrelated to college. We also do not accept letter of recommendation requests from students in grades 9–11.

Students who are needing a letter of recommendation for a scholarship or summer program are strongly advised to work with a teacher. Most scholarships and summer programs require details on how the student performs within a classroom setting. Counselors do not have this sort of information. Please be sure to give teachers ample time to write a letter of recommendation.

DEADLINE TO REQUEST: OCTOBER 15TH

DEADLINE POLICY:

Students must give their counselor 3 weeks notice - no exceptions!
Senior profiles and online portal invitations must be submitted 3 weeks before your earliest application deadline or by October 15th - whichever comes first.
- For example, if your earliest deadline is November 1st, your senior profile and online portal invitation must be in by October 11th.
A recommendation request will not be considered until the Senior Profile is complete. No senior profile = no letter! Waive FERPA!
Senior profile form will close on October 15th at 3:30pm.
Deadline policy applies to colleges and scholarships.
Failure to abide by the deadline policy and the steps to request a letter (below) will result in the denial of a letter of recommendation.

HOW TO REQUEST FOR A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

Students must complete ALL STEPS 3 weeks prior to their earliest college/scholarship deadline.

STEP 1: Invite your counselor to your online application portals (e.g. Common App, Coalition, MIT, CSU EOP, scholarship portal, etc.) by entering their full name and email address.

STEP 2: On your online application portals, select the colleges you are applying to, as well as your decision plan due date for each college (if applicable).

STEP 3: Senior Profile.
Complete the Senior Profile form for your counselor below. There are approximately 7 sections on the senior profile, so plan your time accordingly. Once you submit, you will not be able to make any changes. After you click submit, check your email for a copy of your responses to share with teachers who are writing a LOR for you.

Letters of Recommendation should not be an expectation. We strongly advise students to formally ask your counselor and teachers for a letter of recommendation. Counselors and teachers reserve the right to deny a letter of recommendation request.
