Creating community to heal ourselves and our students using an assets lens
Historically, as educators we asked: “What’s wrong with you?”
Trauma-Informed practices shifted our thinking to, “What happened to you?”
Healing-Centered Engagement asks, “What’s right with you?”
As educators, we have worked to apply Trauma-informed education and Social Emotional Learning in our schools and classrooms. Trauma-informed and SEL practices provide the foundation to begin to understand our students/colleagues and ourselves. Healing-Centered Engagement and Transformative Social Emotional Learning are frameworks that build on top of that foundation, using an asset-based lens, leading to increased learning and more equitable outcomes.
Healing-Centered Engagement and Transformative SEL further the work of Trauma-Informed Care and traditional SEL by helping us to understand that:
trauma is not only individual, it is collective and as such, healing requires collective action
focusing on strengths and assets, rather than centering traumatic experiences, allows for healing
individual growth, interpersonal relationships, and community-building are necessary for both healing and deep learning
What will we learn and how will we learn it?
Using healing-centered engagement and transformative SEL practices in schools is not about being a therapist, sharing deep and personal trauma, or creating practices that are only about feelings. In a setting that uses these new frameworks, participants will be asked to reflect on their identity, experiences, and relationships with students and/or colleagues, emphasizing personal agency and psychological safety in making choices about what and how much to share.
Participants will work together to learn how to:
view themselves and their students/colleagues through an asset-based lens
create richer, deeper learning experiences within the practices that they already use
integrate immediately implementable Transformational SEL strategies in any role or setting
All Certificated and Classified Staff who hope to learn how to embody practices that create inclusive and equitable environments! In this PD, we intentionally work to create community in each cohort. We hope you will join us!
