Our Mission: The mission of this course is to help leaders develop essential coaching skills that support the continued growth of educators within FUHSD. Over the course of the sessions outlined below PD participants will:
develop a coaching mindset and
be equipped with a robust set of tools to engage their colleagues in inquiry that allow our district to pursue equity and excellence for all.
In order to achieve this mission, we have structured the course so that all participants can:
Practice coaching skills in a safe space with a fellow participant
Identify when and how to coach from the three different coaching stances
Develop their toolkit of trust-building strategies
Inquire into their own coaching practice to meet their growth goals as a coach
Apply coaching skills with a willing colleague (optional)

Frequently Asked Questions
Who should participate in this PD opportunity?
Any educator in FUHSD that is looking to build their leadership skills should consider taking this course. It might be especially helpful if you are currently, or plan to be, in a leadership position that supports the growth of other educators, such as Department Leads, Lead Resource Specialists, ELD Coordinators, Curriculum Leads, New Teacher Mentors, or administrators.
How much time will participation require?
You are committing to four full-day and one half-day (PM) sessions. Beyond the sessions, there may be some additional time spent collecting observational data for your Coachee’s inquiry, depending on their focus. This will be worked out between you and the Coachee and supported by the facilitators as needed.
What kinds of support and resources will be provided?
You will be paired with another PD participant to practice your newly learned coaching skills in a safe space! Additionally, you will have the option to coach a willing colleague in the second semester. The PD facilitators will be available to provide you with individualized support to help you continue to grow your coaching skills. You will be introduced to various coaching tools, and we will utilize excerpts from texts and articles, as necessary.
What’s the difference between this PD and Courageous Leaders?
While both PD courses provide participants with tools, skills, and strategies that are needed to lead, Courageous Leaders focuses on equipping leaders with organizational tools, protocols, and structures to lead a group, whereas Coaching Skills for Leaders hones in on how leaders can employ a repertoire of coaching skills to build capacity in individual educators. We see coaching as a critical, high-leverage process you can use to support colleagues in the ambitious work of ensuring high levels of learning for all students.
Do I need to join this PD with a partner?
No! While it would be great if you did this PD with someone you enjoy working with, we will make sure that everyone gets to practice their coaching skills.
Can I earn units for participation?
Yes, we offer internal units, with an option to purchase external units from UOP.
