Action Kits | Guías para la Acción

As part of this program, we created a series of guides to facilitate participation and activation:

• WatchParties [Reuniones Comunitarias]- A great way to organize a party and invite more people to join a virtual workshop.

• Youth Ambassadors [Jóvenes Embajadores]- A resource for youth to embrace climate action and promote positive change in your school or community.

• Ideas for Teachers [Ideas para Maestr@s]- A list of ideas on how to incorporate part of what we share in this program into the classroom.

• Just Transition Youth Co-Design Project Template [Plantilla para Proyecto Juvenil de Co-Diseño para una Transición Justa]- If you or a group you are part of would like to apply for the Youth Mini-Grants, this can be a useful tool. This template is not required to apply for a mini-grant.

Just Transition | Transición Justa

• From Banks and Tanks to Cooperation and Caring [Español]. A zine created by Movement Generation that explains the Just Transition framework and provides some examples.

• People’s Solutions Lens. A short guide created by It Takes Roots with important questions to distinguish false from real climate solutions.

• Thrive Agenda. A website created by the Indigenous Environmental Network with some proposed actions to create a Just Transition.

• Just Transition: Indigenous Peoples' Perspectives, Knowledge, and Lived Experiences. [Español] In 2024, nearly 100 Indigenous leaders from the seven socio-cultural regions of the world have reached a unanimous agreement on defining a Just Transition with respect to impacted or potentially impacted Indigenous Peoples

• From Isolation to Collective Power Through Organizing. An inspiring video that connects climate justice and other social justice issues, while highlighting the power of community organizing.

• Remembering Forward. A visioning in this time of transition. A work/coloring book designed by Native Movement and the Just Transition Collective that introduces some important concepts in the just transition framework. 

• ACTIVITY! Climate and Environmental Justice Through a Just Transition. [Español] A series of free lessons co-produced as a result of the Community Education in Action first in-person workshops in Seattle and Yakima in 2024, posted on the ClimeTime resource hub. 

• ACTIVITY! Co-designing activities to achieve a just future. [Español] A multi-phase activity that fosters connection, explores climate justice through the Just Transition framework, and culminates in collaboratively creating zines that promote community-led solutions and inspire collective action.

Climate Change | Cambio Climático

• ClimeTime. A website part of the ClimeTime network with links to many resources, case studies, websites, and more. 

• Climate Learning Resources [Español, recursos limitados]. A webpage part of Teaching Tools for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education presents a collection of resources for STEM education around climate change, incorporating a justice lens. It contains tools, links to other sites, examples of assessments, videos, and more. Produced by UW College of Education.

• Having Climate Change Conversations [Español]. An activity designed by 350.org can be incorporated into a handout to promote a deep conversation about the impact of climate change.

• The Climate Crisis Has a History. A timeline and a teaching resource created by the Zinn Education Project. It contains links to other resources. 

• ACTIVITY! Fighting climate change through collective action. [Español] This activity guides participants in exploring the emotional impact of climate change and eco-anxiety while fostering hope through collective action and justice-centered solutions rooted in the Just Transition framework.

Climate Justice | Justicia Climática

• Climate Stories. A collection of youth-created videos that share stories about the impact of their communities and how they are fighting it.

• A People's Climate Movement. A comic/zine created by 350.org Portland that focuses on local issues and local actions by community members, by pointing out that the root of climate change is not greenhouse gas emissions, but the social, political, and economic systems that promote the reliance on fossil fuels.

• Teach Climate Justice Campaign. A website by Zinn Education Project that contains links to teaching resources, stories, a climate crisis timeline, and other activities.

• Tackling Climate Change through Environmental Justice High School. A short curriculum by NOAA that explores connections between environmental discrimination and ways to address environmental injustices. Lessons can be adapted for community education environments. 

• Emergencia Climática. Una guía didáctica creata por Entre Pueblos y EduAlter, con información y actividades para discutir los efectos del cambio climático desde una perspectiva comunitaria y de activismo social. 

• Marco de Justicia Climática. Una página que incluye el reporte, así como eventos y recurosos, creado por Green Latinos.

• ACTIVITY! Climate and environmental justice through civic engagement. [Español] This activity series combines storytelling, civic engagement, and creative expression to empower participants to challenge dominant climate narratives, explore justice issues, and amplify their voices through testimony or artivism.

Environmental Justice | Justicia Ambiental

• Environmental Justice! How can we create environments that are healthy for everyone? [Español]. A community research guide developed by the Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) in partnership with the InterAcademy Partnership. It includes links to the guide, teacher instructions, and a StoryMap with additional resources.

• Mini Lessons: WE ACT. A compilation of online learning modules including videos, presentations, worksheets, and other resources. Produced by WE ACT.

• Reporting on Environmental Racism. An activity for high school students created by Learning for Justice that leads into exploring the disproportional impact of environmental injustices on BIPOC communities.

• EJ Atlas. The Global Environmental Justice Atlas (EJAtlas) documents and catalogues social conflicts around environmental issues around the world. It is an online interactive platform coordinated and managed by a team of researchers and activists.

Resilience | Resiliencia

• Just Recovery. A framework by Climate Justice Alliance and Movement Generation that looks into community resilience as a key component to climate resilience.

• What is Climate Resilience? [Español] An article by the Union of Concerned Scientists that explores the connections between climate resilience and climate justice.

• Community-led Resilience Hubs. An example of a community-led and collective action approach incorporated into a StoryMap.

• Community Resilience. A set of tools and informational resources through the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit, managed by the NOAA’s Climate Program Office.

• HUD Community Resilience Toolkit. [Español] A guide that focuses on recovery based on the mitigation of the impacts of natural-related hazards. This is a resource from a government perspective, but looking into collaborations with local communities.

• Washington's Climate Resilience Strategy. [Español] A webpage by the WA State Department of Ecology that describes the efforts to address climate hazards and centering environmental justice strategies.

Co-Design | Co-Diseño

• Designing, Sustaining, and Evaluating Environmental Justice Projects: The Critical Community Science Tool. An article written by Kelsie Fowler that proposes a tool to connect the classroom and communities working together for environmental and climate justice. 

• The Plastics Project Handbook. A youth-centered and co-designed curriculum by the Vermilion Sea Institute and Aventureros for realizing environmental change based on how to fight plastic pollution. 

• Guide to co-design. A site by the Sunlight Foundation under the Roadmap to Informed Communities, that explores the process of co-design as a participatory model and offers examples as well as tips.

• Community-Led Co-Design Kit. An open-source toolkit for sharing knowledge about how to do co-design led by communities, created by the Inclusive Design Research Centre. 

• What is co-design? A great illustrated site with resources, templates, and lots of graphic elements in case you prefer fewer words and more images.  Created by Beyond Sticky Notes. 

• Checklist: Are you ready for co-design? A great tool by Co-Design.Tools if you are planning to co-design a program or tool, but not sure if you are ready or where to start. 

• Connecting science instruction to neighborhood life through collaborative design with community. Another great tool from the Institute for Science+Math Education that explores different models of co-design where teachers, students, and families can come together to bring ideas into action.  

• Co-diseño o diseño participativo. Una breve introducción al tema, ideas acerca de pros y contras, creada por la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya.

• El Trabajo Con, Desde y Para La Comunidad. Una guía que explora las colaboraciones entre estudiantes, escuelas y comunidad para crear espacios y contenidos relevantes para y por la comunidad. Creado por la Comisión Nacional para la Mejora Continua de la Educación en México. 

Advocacy and Activism | Activismo político y activismo

• Find and contact your local representatives. Don’t know who your representatives are?  Do you know what initiatives are being discussed? USA.gov has a site that can help you finding the information you need. 

• Youth Lobby. A guidebook by Our Climate with ideas and strategies to promote youth activism.

• My Policy Worksheet. An activity by EcoRise to imagine policies for our communities by our communities. It includes reflection questions to guide people through the process.

• Artivism. In this video produced by Action for the Climate Emergency, Yamile Salgado, a youth living in Wisconsin, describes her way to fight climate change and foster a bigger movement as a form of activism through art.

• Youth Activist Toolkit. A collection of strategies and resources to promote activism in multiple ways. Created by Advocates for Youth. 

• 10 Questions for the Future: Student Action Project. A lesson plan by Facing History & Ourselves that includes learning resources to promote critical thinking in the design of student-led action projects. 

• Washington State Legislative Youth Advisory Council. The official nonpartisan youth advisory body to the state legislature.

• Acción y capacidad de acción  en el mundo de hoy. Una mini-lección creada por Facing History & Ourselves que promueve el pensamiento crítico en estudiantes para promover acciones de cambio. 

• Washington Student Climate Assembly: Climate Change in the Civics Classroom. A curriculum created by Pacific Education Institute that overviews climate change, current Washington and worldwide laws and regulations, Tribal sovereignty, and advocacy strategies.

• Alianza Youth Leadership Program is a youth of color-led movement of collective voices connecting leaders to unlock their leadership potential and bring change to their communities. Through community organizing and training, Alianza aims to build onto the leadership of youth of color by providing them a platform and resources to do so. To be part of Alianza, you have to participate in one of our ongoing programs or events, which at the moment include our Youth Fellowship Program (ages 19-24), our Advocacy Council program (15 to 18) or our Annual Leadership Conference (15 to 24). 

  • El Programa de Liderazgo Juvenil de Alianza es un movimiento de voces colectivas liderado por jóvenes de color que conecta a líderes para desbloquear su potencial de liderazgo y traer cambios a sus comunidades. A través de la organización y capacitación comunitaria, Alianza busca aprovechar el liderazgo de los jóvenes de color brindándoles una plataforma y recursos para hacerlo. Tools | Herramientas

• Environmental Health Disparities Map. An interactive map that uses data regarding exposure to pollution and connects it to other socioeconomic factors to reflect environmental and climate injustices across Washington State, per census tract. Front and Centered co-created a short guide on how to use the map and design a photovoice project.

• Fieldscope. A map-based data collection and analysis platform managed by BSCS Science Learning. FieldScope enables organizations, community members, and learners to monitor and actively address issues, such as environmental and social challenges, that are concerning to them. 

• Getting Started to Create Your Own Climate and Energy. A webpage by the Committed to Climate and Energy Education that contains templates and ideas of how to design lessons and activities and link them to Next Generation Science Standards (educational standards). This is a great tool for teachers. 

• Climate and Economic Justice Screening tool.  An interactive map by the U.S. Council on Environmental Quality that looks into environmental, health, and socioeconomic data at a census tract level to identify overburdened and underserved communities across the United States.

• Climate Action Toolkits. A collection of different toolkits focused on emergency preparedness for different climate hazards as well as multiple ideas to continue taking action from individual to community levels. Produced by The Climate Initiative.

• Circular Resilience Map. An interactive map produced by NextCycle Washington shows the connections between community-focused circular economies (e.g., community reuse, repair, share, compost) and the compounding threats to community resilience facing Washington State, considering environmental and some climate justice issues.  

• Nuestro Horizonte es El Buen Vivir. (Español). A toolkit created by Mijente that focuses on different grassroots Just Transition strategies. It includes examples,

Education | Educación

• Critical Pedagogy. A research guide by Harvard University Gutman Library. It includes some basic concepts in the framework and some tips for putting them into practice.

• Solidarity-Driven Co-Design. A model by Family Leadership Design Collaborative to promote educational justice. 

• Next Generation Science Standards. A collection of tools to support the integration of NGSS into lessons.

• Teaching materials. A collection of resources, including lessons, from Zinn Education Project that focus on social justice around different topics, including pollution and climate change.

• CLEAN. This is a network of teachers and educators around the world that connect virtually and have created an outstanding collection of free educational resources, from kids to adults, including lessons, activities, visualizations, and more.

• Elevating the cultural wealth of multilingual students, families, and communities in climate justice education. A very useful tool created by the Institute for Science+Math Education that promotes the incorporation of funds of knowledge into climate justice education. It includes tips and links to other resources.
