Students have already started studying for their GCSE science qualifications from the beginning of year 9. All students are studying the fundamental concepts of science at the same level in year 9.
In the summer, they will complete end of year 9 assessments which will help us to decide the GCSE science route they will continue with.
There are 3 science pathways:
Triple science (biology, chemistry and physics) - 6 exams, 1h45m each, 3 GCSEs, grades 9-4 available.
Combined science higher (biology, chemistry and physics) - 6 exams, 1h15m each, 2 GCSEs, grades 9-4 available.
Combined science foundation (biology, chemistry and physics) - 6 exams, 1h15m each, 2 GCSEs, grades 5-1 available.
Practical work will be carried out as part of normal teaching and is assessed by questions within the written exams. Mathematical skills also represent a significant element of the exams, and students will be expected to apply skills used in GCSE mathematics.
The general themes studied in GCSE science are as follows:
Biology
Human body systems
Biological processes
Genetics and evolution
Diseases
Plants
Ecology
Chemistry
Atoms
Periodic table
Reactions
Organic chemistry
The atmosphere
Resources
Physics
Energy
Electricity
Particles
Radioactivity
Forces
Waves
