Art & Design gives you the freedom to express yourself through drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, digital design, textiles, ceramics, — whatever medium inspires you.
This course helps you build creativity, imagination, and confidence. You’ll learn how to explore ideas, research artists and designers, experiment with different techniques and materials, and present your work in your own style.
Whether you enjoy hands-on making, or exploring ideas and concepts, Art & Design is a fantastic way to bring your creativity to life
What does a typical lesson look like?
Lessons might involve:
Researching artists, designers or craftspeople and analysing their work
Sketching, drawing or experimenting with ideas in sketchbooks
Trying out different materials and techniques — painting, printing, collage, clay, textiles, digital design, mixed media, etc.
Developing ideas through drafts, models or prototypes
Producing final pieces — paintings, sculptures, designs, textiles, or mixed media works
Annotating work with ideas, reflections, and context
What sort of learner does well in this subject?
You’ll thrive in Art & Design if you:
• Are curious, imaginative, and enjoy exploring ideas
• Like experimenting with different materials and techniques — from drawing and painting, to sculpture
• Enjoy sketching, making, crafting, or designing — you don’t have to be perfect to start!
• Are willing to reflect on your work and build both creative and technical skills over time
• Are patient and committed to developing a project through research, practice and refinement
If you enjoy expressing yourself visually, experimenting with different media, and problem-solving creatively — this subject could be perfect for you.
The course has two components:
Component 1: Portfolio (60%)
You will build a portfolio over the two years. This includes a sustained project — from first ideas, research and experimentation to final outcome — plus a selection of other work done during the course (sketchbooks, experiments, preparatory studies, models, designs, etc.)
Component 2: Externally-Set Assignment (40%)
In Year 11 you respond to a starting point set by AQA. You produce preparatory work, then complete a 10-hour supervised art/design project that shows your ideas, skills, creativity and personal response
Both parts are marked out of 96 marks, and your submitted work must show clear evidence of the four assessment objectives: investigating ideas, experimenting with media/techniques, recording observations and developing a final personal response.
This GCSE is a great stepping stone for A-level Art & Design, BTEC Art & Design or other creative/vocational courses. It’s ideal if you enjoy art, design, crafts, digital media or fashion, and want to continue creative work or study in those areas.
Possible future pathways include:
A-Level Art & Design or related creative subjects
Vocational or technical courses in graphic design, fashion, textiles, product design, photography, 3D design, architecture or media arts
Careers in illustration, graphic design, interior or product design, fashion, photography, ceramics, animation, media, advertising — or any job that values creativity, problem-solving and design thinking
The ability to develop ideas, experiment, problem-solve, and present creative work is valuable not only in creative fields, but also in many academic and professional areas.
