Geography helps you understand the world around you — from local environments to global issues such as climate change, urbanisation, and resource management. You’ll develop skills in analysing data, interpreting maps, and evaluating complex information, while learning how people and environments interact across different places and scales.
Geography combines scientific, social, and analytical skills, making it one of the most versatile GCSE subjects. It encourages curiosity about the planet, global awareness, and an appreciation of the challenges facing our world today.
Geography lessons are dynamic and varied, involving group discussions, data analysis, and fieldwork. You’ll study case studies from the UK and around the world, comparing how physical and human processes shape different environments. Lessons combine written work, map skills, multimedia resources, and interactive activities that make learning engaging and relevant.
.Geography suits students who are curious about the world and enjoy linking ideas between people, places, and the environment. You’ll do well if you:
• Have strong reading, writing, and analytical skills
• Enjoy interpreting maps, graphs, and data
• Are interested in current affairs and global issues
• Can think critically and work independently
• Enjoy fieldwork and applying classroom knowledge to the real world
Being organised, observant, and willing to engage with complex topics will help you thrive in Geography.
GCSE Geography is assessed through three written examinations at the end of Year 11:
• Paper 1: Living with the Physical Environment (35%)
Focuses on physical geography, including natural hazards, ecosystems, and physical landscapes in the UK. Includes geographical skills.
• Paper 2: Challenges in the Human Environment (35%)
Covers human geography topics such as urban issues, economic development, and resource management. Includes geographical skills.
• Paper 3: Geographical Applications (30%)
Involves issue evaluation based on a pre-release case study and assessment of fieldwork knowledge and understanding.
GCSE Geography provides a pathway to A Level Geography and related subjects such as Environmental Science, Sociology, and Economics. It also supports university courses and careers in areas including environmental management, urban planning, international relations, tourism, and sustainability.
Geography develops highly transferable skills — data interpretation, critical thinking, problem-solving, and written communication — making it valuable for future careers in law, journalism, finance, teaching, or business.
