Information regarding State mandated health screenings: https://www.friscoisd.org/departments/health-services/required-screenings
The Special Senses and Communications Disorders Act, Texas Health and Safety Code require that children enrolled in public school in Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd and 5th grade and new students to FISD in 2nd and 4th grade have vision and hearing screenings. In addition, girls in 5th grade are to be screened for Scoliosis – an abnormal spinal curvature.
Vision/Hearing Screening:
- If your student wears glasses or contacts, please make sure they wear them for their screening.
- The screenings are simple, this is not a medical exam and only takes a few minutes.
- If you choose to have your child screened by your own physician, please let me know in writing. I will need documentation of the results of the hearing and vision screening for their health record.
5th Grade Girls Only – Scoliosis Screening:
- Your student will be assessed individually, in the privacy of the clinic with another female adult present. For best visualization of the spine it is recommended that the shirt be off. Girls should wear a sports bra or a bathing suit top underneath their shirt on the day of screening. Girls with long hair – please have your hair up in a ponytail. The screening is simple, it is not a medical exam. I will look at your child’s back and shoulders while she stands and bends forward.
- If your child is currently under a physician’s care for Scoliosis, your child has had a scoliosis screening during a recent well visit checkup or you would rather have your child screened by your own physician, please let me know in writing. I will need documentation of the Scoliosis screening for their health record.
- If you object to your child being screened for religious tenets, please send a request via email buccambj@friscoid.org and I will forward the Affidavit of Religious Exemption form to you to be signed and returned.
