Asthma is a chronic lung disease and can be quite serious if not managed carefully and correctly. If your child has been diagnosed Asthma or Reactive Airway Disease {RAD}, I strongly encourage you to provide asthma medication for the school nurse to keep in the clinic to administer to your child as needed. This is the safest thing you can do for your child. I will notify you via email or a phone call when your child has used their medication and I will call you to pick your child up from school if the medication isn't helping.
Per FISD Policy, all asthma medications are to be kept in the clinic and will be administered by the nurse. Students are NOT allowed to carry ANY medication at school unless their doctor has completed a specific form which must also be signed by the parents and turned in.
If your child has an inhaler, it will need to have the prescription label attached either to the box it came in or the inhaler itself. Please send in your child’s spacer/chamber if they have one. If you no longer have the label or box, your pharmacy will usually be happy to print a new label for you for free. We must have the label and correct paperwork on file before you turn the medication into the clinic. Take a moment to check expiration dates and uses remaining before dropping off the medication. Unlabeled or expired inhalers will not be administered.
Your child's inhaler will be sent with their teacher if your child goes on a Field Trip. Our teachers are authorized and trained to use inhalers. The teacher will return the inhaler to me upon returning to campus. If your child has no medication at all for their asthma and develops asthma issues on a Field Trip, you will be contacted to pick your child up from the Field Trip location, if there is a concern of emergency, staff will call 911 for emergency help.
Parents should provide their student's own medications. Parents will also need to submit an updated Asthma Action Plan to their campus nurse to ensure we are able to care for your student in the best way possible while they are at school.
In the event of an EMERGENCY: Frisco ISD will provide emergency treatment using an inhaler with a spacer. Each campus will be equipped with one (1) emergency inhaler for this circumstance.
