MTSS
Data Driven Intervention
With the MTSS model, we work with the data in our Universal Screeners to determine Tiers of support that individual students might need.
Additional Diagnostic data can help us determine very specific skills we can address to personalize learning for students and more frequent Progress Monitoring can help us track student progress on their goals.
Diagnostics
Reading
Students who are at/below 24 PR on STAR take STAR Phonics
Additional information to help decide what to target for intervention could come from:
STAR Mastery Standards Reports
Math
Students who are at/below 24 PR on STAR might qualify for Tier 2 or 3 instructional intervention
Additional Information could come from:

Considering Reading
When looking for where to start with Tier 2 reading intervention consider the Simple View of Reading, which tells us that
Word Recognition + Language Comprehension = Reading Comprehension
Students who are struggling with reading comprehension more than likely have gaps in their Foundational Reading standards.
STAR
STAR: Plan Instruction
Access by going to Record Book
Plan Instruction with Nearpod
Student Recommendations
Preview the Nearpod lessons to determine if they would be better as teacher led or self-paced. For Language Arts, look for lessons with the Cricket logo and Lallio - these are very thorough
STAR: Mastery Reports
Access by going to Record Book >> Choose a Student Name >> Identify a test date and choose "View Mastery"
Click on each of the skill areas to see data on individual standards
Change the grade level to see performance in the standard progression
Switch between Skill tabs and Early Literacy on this screen
For help with STAR CBMs click here
STAR CBMs
STAR CBMs are available under the Math and Reading Record Book - on the CBM English (or Spanish) Assessments Tab.
Star CBM allows you to accurately assess students’ reading and math development so that you can better target instruction and intervention to each learner’s specific needs. Teachers administer one-on-one assessments of one minute (or ninety seconds for Rapid Color Naming), then use the results to understand students' learning gaps, instructional needs, and patterns of errors so they can leverage students' strengths and identify opportunities for growth. As you give the assessments again over time, you can see how students are progressing.
Core Resources
Wonders
Locate Tier 2 and Tier 2 intervention books - either in print, or digital books can be found in McGraw Hill >> Resources >> Resource Library
Reveal
For each unit, you will find a "Targeted Intervention" button for resources that include Guided Support instructions and printables.
IXL - GR 2-5
Diagnostic
Encourage students to "Step into the Arena" to get a personalized recommendations plan.
The initial diagnostic takes 45 minutes per subject (Reading and Math) to identify a level for a student. Then to retain an accurate level, students should Step into the Arena to answer a few questions each week.
Access student recommendations from the Diagnostic Overview page by clicking on the paper icon next to each student's level line.
Students access their recommendations from the Recommendations tab.
Assign Specific Skills
Based on the information you've gathered by standards or skills from STAR or additional diagnostics you've used, you can assign skills based on specific standards.
Go to Learning >> Skill Plans >> Kentucky Academic Standards for Math or Language Arts and choose the grade level of the skill you want to assign practice for - you can go back to previous grade levels for this
Click the star next to the specific practice you want to assign, then choose the student from the course by clicking on the arrow/carrot icon.
K-2 Resources
Lexia
From your dashboard review information under "Needs Instruction" and "Skill Builders". You can print lessons to review one-on-one with students.
Find additional resources under the Resources tab at the top of the screen and check out the Lexia Connections list of lessons you might pull from.
Seesaw
Search by Skill or Standard (click View Standards and Curriculum Alignment and select the state and grade).
The phonics lessons are very thorough here and include video and lots of opportunities for practice. This would be good for one-on-one lessons or student self paced practice after you've had a mini lesson.
Seesaw - AI
The New AI Assistant will help you write quick formative assessments to include in lessons.
Select the checkmark icon then the robot icon to access this feature.
High Quality Supplemental Curriculum Resources
UFLI Toolbox
Click here for the Toolbox. While you really need the UFLI manual to help with phonics lessons, you could pull the Home Practice Activity for a quick one-on-one intervention strategy or roll-and-read word lists.
For information about how to use the Home Practice click here
Check out the digraphs here for an example.
The Digital Work apps are also helpful for one-on-one practice.
Core Knowledge - Skills Books
Click here for the ELA filtered texts and here for the Math filtered texts.
Further filter by your grade level.
ELA - for K-2 there are Skill books that have Science-Based Reading, explicit phonics lessons you could use for remediation. Check out this kindergarten skills page.
For 3-5 grades they have Ancillilary books that include a lengthy assessment and remediation guide. Check out this third grade example.
Khan Academy Kids
This is an iPad app that has to be set up and monitored through the student's device. There are a lot of high quality lessons that students could use for practice.
Microsoft Reading Coach
Tier 2 and 3 students might practice fluency using Microsoft's Reading Coach and Progress. Students read passages and the program analyzes their fluency and immediately provides practice on the words they struggled with the most.
