Update from the Principal's Desk:
Parents, thank you for completing the survey regarding your main priorities during the middle school years at SFMS. You shared that you like the grade level newsletters to be bulleted with important dates for subjects and school events, and that has been shared with the grade levels.
At both curriculum nights I shared the pie chart below with parents that indicated your priorities, and I also shared what we have done to help meet your needs.
In addition to FLEX sessions to support your children academically and socially, we are also bringing back All A's breakfast in the winter and spring, as well as the continued RISE rewards for students who exemplify our SFMS values of Responsibility, Integrity, Safety, and Empathy. Thank you for your continued feedback. Please feel free to reach out to me or any administrator with any suggestions you have for the greater good!

We will be reading Peak by Roland Smith and all students should have a copy of this book by October 2. Also, we will be reading informational texts which give background information about the story.
The theme of this unit is "Adversity", and students will collect evidence to help answer the question: "how do people overcome adversity in the face of overwhelming obstacles?" Then, students will use this evidence to write an informational essay that we will be working on in class.
Students will learn how to write a thesis statement, introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, introduce evidence, parenthetical citation, and concluding paragraphs.
This essay will be due before students leave for Thanksgiving on November 16.

I hope everyone had a nice Labor Day weekend with your family. Now that we have been in school for over a month, please have a discussion with your child to see how they are feeling about 7th grade. Tests and quizzes have begun in earnest. This is a time where the stress level can rise. You can help your student by encouraging them to tackle each task one at a time. Have them use their agenda or a calendar to map out all their commitments. Many of our students have lots of extracurricular activities so staying organized is such an important skill. If students are spending more than a couple of hours on homework a night, please reach out to let the teacher know. Flex time is a great opportunity for students to catch up on work.
Looking ahead:
Our Signs of Suicide Prevention Program will be presented in October. Please take the time to preview the program here.
The permission form is on Infinite Campus. Please complete this form.

Parent Volunteer Opportunities:
Sign up HERE if you would like to volunteer throughout the school year.
We love our SFMS teachers! To our new parents, Welcome!! Each month we try to do something special to let our teachers know all of their hard work is appreciated! This first 1/2 of the year we would like to cover lunch duty on the following dates with volunteer parents:
Sept 14- Parents providing soft drinks for teachers
Oct 18- Concrete Craft of North Atlanta providing lunch
Nov 17-Cross Country Mortgage, LLC providing lunch
Dec 7-South Forsyth Middle School providing Coffee Bar
Volunteers stand in the cafeteria for an hour and let the kids know when to head back to class. You will be with 7 other volunteers and maybe get to embarrass your child! It is super easy! This gives the teachers a quiet time to enjoy lunch and it is a much appreciated way to give back. If you can’t come during school hours, please consider donating soft drinks for our teachers. You can send these in with your student and drop off at the main office. There is a slot for these on the sign up as well.
