Update from the Principal's Desk:
SFMS Families-
We have had an excellent first full week of school. The car rider line has been manageable, busses have been on time and smooth, and, most importantly, our students have been smiling and appear happy to be back! We certainly didn’t plan for three out of the six days of dismissal to be stormy, but I think we weathered it well. We had class meetings on Thursday with all grade levels to explain our behavioral expectations, as well as have some fun with the plate game. Ask your students to play with you as a family.
On a logistics note, please remember that we do not excuse absences for car rider tardies due to weather. If you are a car rider, please plan appropriately. Also, please be certain that your contacts in IC are up-to-date for student check out’s.
Although we always have a lot to celebrate as a school, I want to share with you my pride for our band program and football program. Our symphonic band program was recently invited to compete in the esteemed Music for All National Competition 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana. To say this is a big accomplishment is truly an understatement. Big congrats to Dr. Poor and the band program. Also, let’s give our football players a huge pat on the back to the football team! Our football players played hard against rivals, The Lakeside Lions, this past Tuesday! It ended in a tie, and we are proud of those kids and coaches!
As we move into the semester, thank you for supporting our mission of embracing, empowering, and educating our students and one another.

We are so excited to have your kids back in our classrooms! This week we began our Building Blocks unit. This unit acts as a refresher on Government, Economics, and Religion. This unit gives a general overview of these topics before we look at individual countries. There will be an economics quiz on Monday (8/14) and the Building Blocks test is scheduled for the following Monday (8/21).
Welcome to 7th Grade Enrichment. We are so excited to work with your children this year! 7th grade enrichment is a graded course where we teach students various reading/reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, listening/speaking and study/organization skills. To start out the year we will spend some time determining what type of learner your child is and how we can use that knowledge to ensure success this year. We will also be spending time creating weekly goals, ensuring their binders are set up for all of their academic classes and explaining/modeling how to effectively use their agenda. Correct agenda usage is vital in 7th grade and is a skill we will spend time addressing daily. This includes time management for both academic and extracurricular activities. All students MUST have an agenda as it is part of their grade for this course. The first study skill we will begin covering this week will be SLANT and students will create a poster illustrating the steps of this strategy and their importance. We will then begin moving into the Test-Taking Strategy and begin our first podcast called Treasure Island 2020.

Welcome to the Nest! I am Ruthie Urban, the 7th grade counselor. I am excited to be back for my second year at South Middle! It is hard to believe that we have already finished our first full week of school. Time does fly by and life gets busy so being intentional about spending time together is important. Some ideas to try: family dinner (with no technology), movie nights, cooking together, putting together a puzzle, or designating a special time each day to talk. The counselors are now on Canvas! Have your students find us on the SFM Student Info Course and click on the “SFM Counseling” button. If you are looking for a way to become involved here at school, please consider being a mentor for our school. There are trainings coming up soon. Check out our Mentor Information Page to register for an upcoming training.
