Grade Level News for 7th Grade

Update from the Principal's Desk:

Parents and Guardians- Big things have been happening this week! Chorus concerts, band performances, and football games! Our CTSO's have been on field trips, and there have been grade level field trips too! Please be certain to fill out the link for our parent survey here. We will use this data to plan our VERTICAL K-12 PARENT NIGHT. This will offer sessions that address issues from kindergarten through 12th grade, and we want to hear your thoughts! We can't plan well without your input.

English-Language Arts News

7th Grade ELA is in our Informational Unit, and students have a multiple-choice formative on Wednesday, 10/18. The quiz covers author’s purpose, text structure, and connotation/denotation. We will continue to study these concepts as we also introduce sentence structure and MLA citations in the upcoming weeks. As we continue to pair the novel Peak with informational texts this unit, we are also adding to various organizers that will be used while drafting our End-of-Unit Essay in November.

Life Science News

7th Grade Science is starting Unit 3: Human Body Systems! We will be studying the basics on the main organ systems in the human body and how those systems work together to support life. Here are some key dates:

Unit 3 Vocabulary Quiz – Monday, October 16th
Summative Project – Friday, November 10th – Friday, November 17th

Social Studies News

We are currently studying the geography of the Middle East and will be beginning the history of the Middle East shortly. This section will cover the conflicts caused by European partitioning of the Middle East as well as U.S. involvement in the Middle East.

Enrichment News

Here is what 7th grade enrichment will be covering :

-We will be wrapping up listening to our podcast Treasure Island 2020.

-Students will be turning in their Podcast Menu Sheet and their Web Quest that will count as a Summative grade.

-We will kick-off Unit 2 by learning about Washington Irving and his inspiration for the story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The next DECA Meeting is Tuesday, October 31st at 7:50AM in the New Media Center Classroom!

Healthcare Science:

6th grade will be learning about Career and Technical Student organizations.

7th grade is focusing on Career and Technical Student organizations.

8th Grade will begin creating a personal leadership plan.

HOSA's chapter meetings will be held on Thursday 10/19 Virtually in Canvas for 6th and 7th grade. We will also have a popsicle Social on October 26, 2023 from 4:30-5:30. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Kauffman at f22003@forsyth.k12.ga.us

Art:

There will NOT be art club on 10/19 OR 10/27. The next meeting dates for art and calligraphy club are:

11/2 - 7th/8th Grade Art Club

With a new quarter beginning on Monday, October 16, the PE classes will be issued locks and lockers for their uniforms. Uniforms can be purchased on school pay any time during the school year. We do expect our students to change clothes for class which includes fitness shoes.

Counseling Corner

Please make sure you indicate your preference on your student participating in the Signs of Suicide program. It will be presented in the 7th grade homeroom classes on October 23, 24, or 25. There is not a paper permission form. It is on Infinite Campus. Please make sure to do this before October 20th. The information about the program is located here.

As your student enters adolescence, it may be necessary to find new and different ways to connect with your student. This can be the time that hanging with friends is preferable to hanging with the parents/guardians. Although this is a very natural transition period, the emerging teenager still needs your support and guidance, even if they don’t admit it. Maybe try to create a family bucket list that has something for everyone! Whatever you choose, enjoy this time with your teen.

A $40 payment needs to be made at the Square Link to confirm a spot for the photo session. All SFMS parents signing up for a session will also receive a reminder email including a link to the PTO's Square Payment site/ URL.

Parent Volunteer Opportunities:

Sign up HERE if you would like to volunteer throughout the school year.
We love our SFMS teachers! To our new parents, Welcome!! Each month we try to do something special to let our teachers know all of their hard work is appreciated! This first 1/2 of the year we would like to cover lunch duty on the following dates with volunteer parents:
- - - - Oct 18- Concrete Craft of North Atlanta providing lunch
      - Nov 17-Cross Country Mortgage, LLC providing lunch
      - Dec 7-South Forsyth Middle School providing Coffee Bar
Volunteers stand in the cafeteria for an hour and let the kids know when to head back to class. You will be with 7 other volunteers and maybe get to embarrass your child! It is super easy! This gives the teachers a quiet time to enjoy lunch and it is a much appreciated way to give back. If you can’t come during school hours, please consider donating soft drinks for our teachers. You can send these in with your student and drop off at the main office. There is a slot for these on the sign up as well.

Math team tryouts are starting!

6th Grade- Dr. Graiser FLEX 10/13

7th Grade- Mrs. Pearce FLEX 10/13

8th Grade- Mrs. Drosopoulos 10/12 & 10/13

If the FLEX session is full when you go to sign up, or you are unable to attend that day, plan on coming in BEFORE SCHOOL on 10/12 or 10/13 at 7:45am. We will start at 8am. If you arrive after 8am, you will not be given additional time.
