It's hard to believe we are beginning our final unit of Semester 1! Students have begun their final unit of the semester, Unit 3: Drama. During this unit, we will learn about stage terms such as dialogue, stage directions, aside, monologue, and more!
We will apply these terms in our reading of the play A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens after some background reading about Victorian England where the play is set. Students will then collect evidence and argue which ghost had the most influence on Scrooge by the end of the play in an argumentative paragraph. Students will also be learning about the different types of dependent clauses.
There will be a drama terms quiz on November 30; a compare and contrast quiz on A Christmas Carol on 12/8; and the argumentative paragraph (which is a summative) on December 14.

It is hard to believe we are already in December and midterms will be here before we know it. Study skills are so important for students to utilize during this time. Not all techniques work the same for each person, so it is very important to assist your students in figuring out what works best for them. Sustaining attention long enough to effectively study can also be a challenge; much of their social media world is characterized being able to find answers quickly through a short video, text, or chat. The frequent interruptions due to those constant notifications can easily distract from studying and homework time. Additionally, midterm exams can cause stress in our children. Helping them discover healthy coping strategies and study skills will make this time a bit easier. Please look below for some ideas to guide your students through the next few weeks.
Flex time has been the favorite time of my day. Students have been signing up for fall flex, practicing relaxation, working as a team, and enjoying popcorn while watching the Peanuts holiday shows. I love seeing my repeat visitors and welcoming new students to participate. Hope you have a great weekend!

Parent Volunteer Opportunities:
Sign up HERE if you would like to volunteer throughout the school year.
We love our SFMS teachers! To our new parents, Welcome!! Each month we try to do something special to let our teachers know all of their hard work is appreciated! This first 1/2 of the year we would like to cover lunch duty on the following dates with volunteer parents:
Dec 7-South Forsyth Middle School providing Coffee Bar
Volunteers stand in the cafeteria for an hour and let the kids know when to head back to class. You will be with 7 other volunteers and maybe get to embarrass your child! It is super easy! This gives the teachers a quiet time to enjoy lunch and it is a much appreciated way to give back. If you can’t come during school hours, please consider donating soft drinks for our teachers. You can send these in with your student and drop off at the main office. There is a slot for these on the sign up as well.
