Newsies was designed to capture the ways in which we seek to keep up-to-date on current events in real life. The process looks something like this:
- Students spend Monday and Tuesday reading non-fiction texts, including magazines for kids and sites such as Dogo News, TweenTribune and Youngzine.
- They have the option to choose an article and form a group or join another group. They read the article two or three times and take notes.
- On Friday, they get together in their Newsie groups to discuss the article.
- They are evaluated on preparation and participation.
