“There is no one system that fits all and if a system we have in place is even killing

the love of reading for one child, then we need to rethink it.”

-Pernille Ripp

From "Breathing New Life into Book Clubs" by Sonja Cherry-Paul and Dana Johansen:

At the time of the year that we delve into book clubs, the students are ready for the independenct that clubs afford. They teach responsibility, cooperation, reliance, and resilience. The students delve really deeply into their reading, and, given the smaller group, those who might otherwise hold back find their voice, risk their thoughts, and contribute. As teacher-observer, you get the chance to see and hear these voices. While I perch, I hear their thinking and I am invisible to them. They become the leaders of thought. I always come out of the book club experience finding a new appreciation for my readers." p. 49
