"The standards are a framework to build around with limitless possibilities,

not a box to confine students or their growth."

~Amy Burvall and Dan Ryder

We want the students to have ownership in all aspects of the learning, including the WHAT of our curriculum. So we carefully choose three to five standards each trimester and ask students to find evidence of mastery. This requires students to have a deep knowledge of the standard and provides us with further information about their understanding of key skills and content. Below is an example of the document we give students to add evidence of their understanding. They look through their work for the trimester to find examples of mastery.

STANDARD: Main idea Informational

Students are also expected to find evidence of what we call the Reading and Writing Stances:

Good readers read often.

Good readers read widely.

Good readers read to learn.

Good writers write often.

Good writers write widely.

Good writers write for various audiences.
