English as an Additional Language (EAL) Compliance

Children/students who require English as an Additional Language (EAL) program planning and instructional support to achieve grade-level learning expectations and reach their full potential are coded with Alberta Education EAL Codes. To be eligible for EAL codes students must be:

Aged at least 3 years 8 months as of August 31 of the school year
Enrolled in ECDP, Kindergarten or Grades 1-12 as an Alberta student

Before an EAL code can be applied, an EAL Benchmark must be completed in Clevr and an annotated sample (writing or speaking) must be uploaded in CLASI.

EAL codes must be monitored annually and EAL Benchmark and Annotated Samples must be updated in Clevr.

Code 301

English as an Additional Language - Foreign-born
Funded
This code must be supported by an annual assessment (benchmark in Clevr and annotated sample in CLASI).
English language learners identified with this code must be receiving English as an Additional Language programming.

Code 302

English as an Additional Language - Canadian-Born or Foreign-Born
Unfunded
This code is for tuition-paying students
This code must be supported by an annual assessment (benchmark in Clevr and annotated sample in CLASI).
The EAL programming provided to children/students identified with code 302 should be the same as that being provided to children/students identified with code 301 or 303.

Code 303

English as an Additional Language - Canadian-born
Funded
This code must be supported by an annual assessment (benchmark in Clevr and annotated sample in CLASI).
English language learners identified with this code must be receiving English as an Additional Language programming.
