The Original Implementation Plan
For the 2019 - 2020 school year, the program will be implemented at Richardson Elementary, with one classroom at each grade level, K-3, operating as a computer science classroom. Those four classrooms will integrate computer science intro their reading and math curriculums utilizing resources from Sioux City's Loess Hills Elementary School, Code.org, and others that may be discovered in the planning phase.
Two - four teachers will be selected or recruited from current staff to form the computer science cohort team that will be responsible for the implementation of the computer science curriculum in 2020-2021. As a vertical team, they will work together to plan instructional progressions while also serving as thought partners for challenges and questions that will arise as they plan and begin implementation.
To expand the program, the preliminary plan is to integrate computer science into core content areas. Starting with a few teachers, we will create a team of "trainers" from participating classroom teachers and district instructional coaches that will be tasked with sharing their knowledge and experience with other teachers. The goal is that from the 2021-2022, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024 school years is to increase the number of classes at each grade level that teach and integrate computer science, until all classrooms have integrated the instruction into literacy and math. This plan will be reinforced if a new elementary is able to be constructed with the next two - three years that will bring both buildings together. Building design will include spaces for collaborative learning for students and staff as well as infrastructure to support whole school computer science learning.
The Reality
2018 - 2019
March - CSE Award!
2019-2020 (First year)
Richardson Cohort started teaching computer science to their students before the COVID shutdown. (piloted 1 class per grade level for kindergarten through third grades)
The Richardson Cohort looked at the Loess Hills Blueprint
Began looking at CSTA Standards, noting important verbs, nouns, and writing learning targets
Lincoln teachers expressed interest in joining Richardson on their computer science journey
2020-2021 (Second year)
One teacher per grade level at both buildings teaching computer science in kindergarten - third graders
Ribbon cutting for the newly made Richardson STEAM Lab that was made possible through the Richardson PTO
Pilot teachers shared integration activities at cohort meetings
Continued work of unpacking the CSTA Standards and began to select grade level priority standards
Awarded the Iowa Professional Development Fund Grant
Partnered with NewBoCo for the cohort meetings and to plan and deliver a five day teacher workshop in June
Celebrated Computer Science Week in kindergarten through third grades with virtual activities, including a virtual Family Coding event, daily activities based on Hello Ruby, and community videos about the impact of computer science on careers
Elementary specials teachers integrated computer science activities during Computer Science Week
Both schools expanded to teaching cs to all students
Addition of a half time Computer Science Integration Coach
Expanded computer science instruction to 4th - 6th grades for all students
All K-3 Richardson/Lincoln students had computer science for both hybrid and in-person learning. Students received either an in-person or virtual cs lesson each week.
