Community participation has been an important component in building our Computer Science is Elementary initiative. Local businesses have partnered to provide videos of real-world problems addressed with the use of computer science in order to reinforce classroom learning.
Family Code Nights and other family events have been used to inform and build support of the community
Parent groups have provided support by funding and creating STEAM lab spaces at both elementary buildings.
After having to cancel our first family event due to the Covid shutdown, we were finally able to host it in April of 2022.
In the Fall of 2022, we added a district Computer Science Facebook page. (FM Computer Science in the Classroom) We use this platform to highlight the integration that our teachers are doing, and to help our community learn about computer science and why it is important.
The 2024 S.T.R.E.A.M. Night event was expanded to include Middle School students. We had over 700 people in attendance that night! We were happy to have businesses and organizations from the past join us again, and to have some new ones join us! A huge thank you to everyone that donated their time and talents to make this event so awesome for our community!
2023 brought exciting additions to our outreach event! We added Reading to our STEAM Night, which became Family S.T.R.E.A.M. Night! We had more business and community involvement, and extended the length of the event. We appreciate all of the people that came together to help get our kids excited about science, technology, reading, engineering, art, and math! Check out the video above!
Families enjoyed an evening of hands-on S.T.E.A.M. activities that were provided by the Computer Science Cohort, and community members. The Fort Madison Fire Department brought a firetruck and showed students different technology on the truck that they use. The Burlington Model Airplane Club brought drone soccer. ISU Extension and Outreach brought a balancing robot activity. Lee County Conservation brought different pelts and a couple of slithering friends! The SCC Computer Club took us on a journey inside a computer with a cardboard model that they made and explained the different parts. Lee County Economic Development Group brought a roller coaster activity. OCI Iowa Fertilizer brought several science activities. Steffensmeier Welding brought three welders and assisted our students in welding their initials! Shug's Tiny Town and Educational Toys set up a display with STEM toys that they carry.
Families also enjoyed a meal from the "Coding Cafe'"! They had to follow the posted Scratch Jr. code to get their food!
