Students will conduct interviews and deliver surveys during this phase and then collect and present the data. Days 14-19
Deliver survey to the community how they decided to do it and collect data. Students need to be able to reach the wider community - they need to brainstorm how to do that best (via e-mail, website on the school, newsletter). They will need to collate the data and present it to their peers. Discuss as a class example surveys and how data is grouped. Talk about percentages and ratios.
Authentic feedback: The participation and quality of information they receive from the survey will provide authentic assessment for them to see how they did. Did the information help them understand their community better?
Self assessment video journal: What role did I play in the survey? How did I contribute to the group? Do I understand the data findings?
Use manipulatives to help understanding of statistics from the data. Talk about sample size, and number of people who said X or Y. Use fractions and % visual aides to help with understanding. Virtual manipulatives can also be helpful and easy to manipulate to help with understanding: http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/topic_t_5.html
