Phase 2 is the beginning of research and learning about community, culture, and spaces in the community. Day 2-7
Giving students some information and provide brainstorming time to base their project learning on. Using a virtual Bingo board, have students do research by giving them access to content that helps them understand
vocabulary and concepts.
Provide videos on:
-Culture and community
-Values
-Recreation and business activities in the community
-who is in the community with them
- how they fit into a community
-examples of things in the community that we already have that bring us closer together
(Mural, church, rec center, gym, restaurants, sports fields, statues, monuments, cemeteries, gardens, playgrounds, volunteer organizations…)
Check-in on their learning on the video journal. They will reply to their original video in flipgrid: How did their original idea of community sync with the information they learned?
What are some things in the community that we already have that bring people together?
Graphic Organizer or Infographic: Design a graphic organizer (with some text) to show your understanding of community.
Extra time for students to understand the basic vocabulary and process it in their own language. Make groups of the same native language at the beginning for this phase only. Provide videos with lots of imagery as extra tools for the ELL students. Allow students with special needs to take an extra day and/or give a teacher assistant a small group to review the material a second time. Do small group sessions on how to record and upload a video to FlipGrid. Make a google doc with all the resources on one page so the student can easily go back to that for reference. Give short, simple quizzes along the way for those who need to check their own understanding during the process. Allow students who need it to have an iPad in their home language for ELL students not comfortable in English yet.
Select texts that are simpler language and have lots of pictures for students with ELL needs and information processing delays. Provide templates for graphic organizers and infographics. Show a lot of examples of different types, and put them on the google doc for easy access to reference later.
