Phase 1 is the first day of the PBL Community Unit. 1 Day long.
Show students how to make and upload their Flipgrid videos using ipads
- Assign groups of 3-4. Have groups choose an authentic role they would like to play within their group. Some ideas I could offer them are: project manager, artistic coordinator, data manager, technology advocate, but they could also come up with their own framework.
- Don’t say too much about the project since I want to pre-assess them on what they think of community.
Pre-assess with a video journal, asking students:
To reply to the driving question.
Say off the top of their head what community is and what communities they are part of.
Have you ever made a survey before and what was it about if yes?
What do you think will be the jobs of your role in the group?
What do they think they would like to use for building their model of the city (virtual platform, 3D printer, maker space and art tools, etc…)
Grouping of students: mix the students according to ability, be sure to have at least one student who is a high flyer with a student who needs extra support. If students are ELL and are comfortable with English enough to be in a group of only English talkers, then assign them to a group without another person who speaks their native language. This can foster their English skills by collaborating in English. If they need some extra help with the basic concepts, I could schedule a meeting with the ELL teacher to ask for a small group time with those students so they can process the concepts within the space of the ELL time. If students who are ELL are really not comfortable with English at all, then allow them to be in a group with another person who speaks the same native language, if possible (not always possible since there are so many languages).
