The Summer Reading Experience is a three-week program which provides an enjoyable and fun way for students to develop many literacy skills. By reading and discussing themes in young adult literature, students will practice skills such as fluency, comprehension, and gain new vocabulary knowledge. In addition, students will be exposed to new ideas and concepts and learn how to be lifelong readers. Plus, we want to convey to students that reading is FUN! As such, we want students to see themselves as readers in the world, experiencing reading through not just class discussions, but also through various field trips that will enhance their learning.

This week-long pilot program will focus on students that have recently entered the American school system. The curriculum will be a balance of basic literacy skills, school survival skills, and life skills. The goal is to ensure that these students are able to start the school year with the skills needed to be successful at Fenton and within the community. Students will understand how to properly use their chromebooks and programs, such as Power School and Google Classroom. They will learn about various resources available to them within the building and behavioral expectations for different classes, such as PE, lab classes, and the ARC. Students will also participate in a variety of field experiences within the Bensenville/Wood Dale community, such as going to the post office or ordering food at a restaurant, that will serve them in their lives outside of the walls of Fenton. One of the goals of the program is to have students produce documents (videos, handouts, screencasts, etc.) that can be used during the school-year for other newcomers to the school. Students will earn 5 hours of community service for the completion of such a document.
