Recognizing the need for sensitive, global citizens, the World Language Department believes that
second language acquisition is an important part of every student’s academic, social and civic
development. Our mission is to provide the opportunity to master the four essential skills of
communication: reading, writing, listening and speaking. In order to gain a broader cultural
appreciation, students will also explore music, literature, art, traditions and history related to the
various languages offered.
Students who take two or more years of a world language in high school are more competitive when
applying to college. Many colleges and universities require two years and highly recommend three to
four years of the same world language. World language courses also fulfill Fenton’s Fine and/or Applied
Arts graduation requirement.
Students have the opportunity to earn the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy. This seal recognizes
students who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English and another language. In order to earn
the Seal of Biliteracy, each student must demonstrate proficiency in English and another language by
the spring of senior year. Students who approach the criteria but do not meet it may be eligible for the
Commendation towards Biliteracy.
