(Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities)
Teachers are responsible for keeping and recording accurate records of both instructional and non instructional assignments, student completion of assignments, and student progress in learning both formally and informally, with all being updated frequently and communicated (Domain 4b).
Teachers are required to maintain grades for each quarter in order to provide a fair final grade at report card time. FCPS policy requires 1 grade per subject per week, recorded in Schoology. Assignment grades will be visible to families for PK-12, while course averages will be available for Grades 6-12. Megan Hurley is the TuES Schoology Ambassador and is available for guidance. Make sure that expectations and criteria for graded work are clearly communicated to the students.
Homework in Elementary Schools - Assignment of homework must be a strategic, authentic part of the learning process, aligning with one or more of the following purposes: Practice, Preparation, Application, Extension.
Guidelines: (per FCPS policy)
PreK – Grade 3: Since research shows that homework is not as beneficial for students in these grades as it is for older learners, teachers should use discretion in assigning homework.
Grade 4 – 5: No more than 45 minutes of homework per night for combined subjects
Teachers should give careful consideration when assigning homework over the holidays and weekends.
Accommodations – Teachers are legally required to ensure that homework is accommodated/ modified as necessary in accordance with students’ IEPs and Section 504 Plans.
Teachers should regularly check assigned homework to provide feedback for progress towards standards proficiency. Student achievement on homework should primarily be used as formative evidence of learning for the teacher and the student.
Graded assignments should make up no more than 10% of a student’s grade.
All record keeping must be completed by county and school set deadlines. This includes data for content areas as well as that mandated by Special Education, 504’s, ELL, Behavior Intervention and any other specialized service.
Keep all test papers, especially formative and quarterly assessments. File them in an organized way in the event that they are needed during parent conferences or for planning individual student programs.
