The North Dakota legislature approved a law, NDCC 15.1 –18.2 that requires school districts to implement a concussion management program. All athletic coaches in grades 7-12 are required to complete the NFHS Concussion in Sports Course online prior to the first day of practice.
Renew your NFHS Concussion Certification online: www.nfhslearn.com. Once completed send the updated certificate to Jenny Schultz in the FPS District Student Activities Office.
Alternatively, you can renew your concussion certification on the Fargo Public Schools Employee Portal. Click here for further information.
FPS Coach Concussion Renewal
Athlete will be removed from activity for remainder of day. AHCP will determine course of action within 24 hours of injury (return to play or concussion protocol). The athlete will take a symptomatic impact test within 72hrs if symptoms are still present.
The athlete must be 24 hours Asymptomatic before they take the Post-Concussion Impact Test and additional concussion tests including but not limited to, balance, memory recall and visual acuity to begin their return to play protocol. Athlete must retest 5-7 days after initial impact test if still symptomatic. **If athlete does not pass “2” post-concussion impact tests, they will usually be referred to a medical doctor for further evaluation.
If Post Concussion Tests scores are acceptable, the athlete will wait 24 hours before starting a light physical exertion test. Walking, swimming, stationary cycling, etc. HR range 100-140. Duration: 20 minutes
If athlete displays no symptoms after 24 hours, they will be given a vigorous physical exertion test. Moderate running, skating, dribbling or weight training, etc. HR range 120-160. Duration: 30 minutes
If the athlete has no reoccurring symptoms within the 24 hours of physical exertion, they will be cleared to resume a non-contact light practice. Sprinting/running, full weight training, etc. HR range 140-180. Duration: 30-60 minutes
If the athlete has no reoccurring symptoms within the 24 hours of light practice, they will be cleared to resume normal practices. HR range 160-200. Duration: full practice
After a full practice and no symptoms, athlete is then cleared to participate.
“Concussion Return to Play” form must be in writing from athletic trainer or medical doctor (trained in concussion management).
If an athlete chooses to see a medical doctor and receives immediate participation clearance, the athlete will still follow the Return to Play Protocol.
Clearance will never be on the same day on which athlete is removed from play.
Please Note: Each individual head injury is treated according to the condition of the athlete. Protocol is subject to change as AHCP feels needed to help ensure the safety of each athlete.
Requirements: Each athlete must have a current and valid baseline test on file before the start of their season. New baseline test should be done every two years. Athlete’s asymptomatic test is set as their new baseline test.
In the event a Transfer of Care form has not been previously filed with the Fargo Public Schools, the designated AHCP medical providers shall not have their decision regarding an athlete’s ability to return to competition overruled by any other AHCP.
