Managing Student Discourse
Proposition 3 of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards states that teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. For classroom discourse to be productive, effective management structures and routines must be in place. The classroom should be a space that supports active discussion where students are respectful of different points of view. Teachers should establish the following structures to employ successful discourse:
Set Routines & Norms
Model Respectful Interactions
Use Structured Discussion Protocols
Set Accountability Measures (Assign Roles & Listen for Academic Language)
Facilitate and Monitor
Provide Reflection Time
