Goals
The goals of this module are to:
-Deepen teacher understanding of the role of student discourse in promoting critical thinking, language development, and equitable access to learning.
-Increase the frequency, quality, and intentional use of student academic discourse across all content areas and grade levels.
-Foster a culture that values and supports student voice as a key driver of engagement and achievement.
Objectives
By the end of the module, educators should be able to:
-Recall the cognitive and academic benefits of student talk, citing research-based practices.
-Apply academic discourse strategies (e.g., Think Pair Share, Fishbowl, sentence stems) across various instructional contexts.
-Design lesson tasks that intentionally embed opportunities for equitable student discourse and language scaffolds.
-Integrate digital tools (e.g., Flip, Padlet, Seesaw, Pear Deck, or AI-enhanced tools) to facilitate, capture, and analyze student academic discourse.
