ABOUT
Webometrics, developed by the Cybermetrics Lab (a research group under the Spanish National Research Council or CSIC), is a ranking system for the world’s universities based on their web presence and impact. Unlike traditional rankings that rely mainly on academic output or reputation surveys, Webometrics emphasizes online visibility, accessibility, and commitment to open access.
Webometrics encourages universities to increase their online academic footprint, publish more research in open-access formats, and ensure that their web content reflects the quality and quantity of their scholarly work.
Key Components of Webometrics
Web Presence
This refers to the size and richness of a website, including the total number of web pages, documents, files, and databases that are publicly accessible. It includes all types of files like PDFs, Word documents, presentations, and multimedia content.
Visibility or Web Impact
This involves analyzing the number and quality of external inlinks (also known as backlinks) pointing to a website. The more high-quality sites that link to an institution’s webpage, the greater its visibility and authority on the web.
Website Usage
This considers traffic data, such as the number of visits, time spent on pages, bounce rates, and geographic sources of traffic. Although this data is harder to collect systematically, it helps measure user engagement and reach.
Scholarship and Openness
A key element of webometrics, especially in the academic context, is the evaluation of how much scholarly content an institution makes publicly available through open access. This includes digital repositories, online journals, conference proceedings, and research databases.
Web Structure and Interlinking
This involves examining the internal and external link architecture of websites, which can reveal patterns of collaboration, institutional networks, and the dissemination of knowledge.
Metrics used:
The ranking is based on four indicators:
Visibility (50%) – Measured by the number of external networks (subnets) linking to the institution’s web domain.
Transparency or Openness (10%) – Number of citations from top authors according to Google Scholar Profiles.
Excellence (40%) – Number of papers among the top 10% most cited in their respective fields from Scimago data.
Updated: The rankings are updated twice a year, usually in January and July.
Scope: Covers over 30,000 higher education institutions worldwide.
