Glsen's solidarity week

Ms. Marcoccia's GSA club and the entire school participated in the week long show of solidarity.

The club's main focus was spotlight the concept of solidarity as a, "voluntary, collective, sustained action based on an understanding that we don’t all share the same risks, and we must work across all differences to ensure that every student has the right to a safe, supportive, and LGBTQ+-inclusive K–12 education. Solidarity involves bringing together different people based on finding common objectives and solutions. Solidarity work happens when you show up to support others experiencing harm and oppression by centering their experiences, leadership, decisions, needs, requests, and ideas."

For the week of November 7–11, the GSA asked that EHS participate in GLSEN's Solidarity Selfie! This request had students, teachers, and administration take a selfie or photo and added, "Solidarity for my identity means...” and "I practice and engage in solidarity by….”. "How are you showing up?" to their social media or classroom door post.

As if Chess wasn't hard enough, try playing it with blindfolds on! Avery Hood and Antonio Ramos square off and play a game totally in their mind! Minju Sung oversees the game to move the pieces as instructed. Try that for fun!

Chess club welcomes all new members of any level. Please see Mr. Ross on the third floor with any questions. The next move is all up to you!

Halloween + french Club + Scavenger Hunt = FUN!

The French Club did a Halloween scavenger hunt, attached below are the winners, senior Audrey Jeanseaume and junior Alexander Wirengard Gil! Scavenger hunt tasks included pretending to be a crow while running around the track and howling at the moon like a werewolf!

The French 3 class just finished reading some of Jean de la Fontaine’s fables and presentations just happened to be on Halloween so they dressed up as the animals in their fables!

The Italian 2 classes did an Italian-American Heritage project throughout the month of October. Projects ranged from creating model monuments, Carnevale masks, cooking demonstrations and travel brochures!

2022 Honor ensemble

Three Eastchester High School students have been selected to the 2022 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Winter Conference All-State Performing Ensembles. The groups will perform at the famed Eastman Theater in Rochester between December 1 and December 4. Several thousand Sophomores and Juniors audition each year for a chance to be selected to an All State ensemble. The EHS Music Department is so proud of their accomplishments!

Molinari - Academic Core US History (in collaboration with Ms. Brown, EHS Media Specialist)

11th graders in Ms. Molinari's class are close to voting age. As part of learning about the Constitution and to support their Civic Participation, they researched, "Who Represents Me?" and "What's on the Ballot?" for the midterm elections of November 2022. Students brainstormed the issues important to them. Then, using the EHS library databases with links provided by Ms. Brown, looked up the state level candidates running for election as well as any propositions on the ballot. They also researched the candidates' positions to determine who they would vote for and reflected on the whole process afterward. Students came away with a better understanding of this important current event and how it connects to what they are learning in US History class.

Bohringer/Molinari - Collab USH & Bohringer USH - The Young Nation Mini Project

11th graders in these classes created children's books about an important event in the early stages of the new nation, post American Revolution. As part of learning about the Constitution, students were challenged to delve deeply into an event from the early part of our nation, such as George Washington's Farewell Address, The Election of 1800, The Marshall Court cases, or the Louisiana Purchase. Students were required to read and annotate their sources, synthesize the information and "teach" it to children with engaging visuals and age-appropriate grammar. There were many creative assignments such as these by Rachel Seabrook, George Washington's Last Rodeo, Isabella Ausanio, The Man with the Plan, and Land for Sale, by Matthew Bellach.

Bohringer/Mahoney/Borys/Boyle - Elected Official Assembly - Nov 18th

The senior class attended an assembly in the EHS auditorium on Friday, Nov 18th. They gathered to hear State Senator Shelley Mayer, County Legislator David Tubiolo, Town Supervisor Anthony Colavita and Board of Education Trustee Judah Holstein speak about topics that are relevant to the students as they prepare to go out into the world. This activity fit perfectly with their coursework in Government & Economics class. Seniors are required to know how to contact their local representatives as part of the New York State curriculum. As the next generation of voters, this exercise helps equip them to make informed decisions. There was a two period assembly during which the panel spoke and answered student-developed questions.

The wellness club

The Wellness Club hosted their Fall Wellness Week November 14-18. The club members planned a variety of activities that promote positive mental health and wellness, many of which were Thanksgiving themed. During the lunch periods, the students enjoyed Thanksgiving Mad Libs and coloring pages, affirmation rocks, and bracelet making. The students also wrote notes expressing their gratitude to the teachers and staff members. The week was a success and provided students with a break from their daily routines and a nice send off before the Thanksgiving holiday!

going green goes into the river

Going Green students volunteered to clean trash out of the Bronx River near the Crestwood Station and picked trash up along the Bronx River pathway. This was in cooperation with the Clean River Project and Westchester Parks Foundation. The cooperative endeavor focused on a project from September through November, where trash is most evident due to the summer months and the increased activity around the river.

The positions are as follows: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The interest meeting was held on September 12th at 7 pm in the cafeteria. After a competitive election, the new members of EGO are: James Allison (President), Isabella Sabelja (Vice President), Anna Murray (Secretary), Leyla Ozkurt (Treasurer).

2022 Pep Rally + Spirit Week

  • 9/30/22 (Pep Rally)

  • Spirit Week: 9/28-10/3

  • Chairs: Sinead Devaney & Emerson Nargi

  • Committee Members: (9th) Lyla Ozkurt, (10th) Chris Mancuso, (11th) Emma Kelly, (12th) Ryan Deasy

The 2022 Pep Rally was one to remember! EGO organized games such as Tug of War, Rock, Paper, Scissors, Musical Chairs and the newest addition to the fun was, Tic Tac Toe! These games were really successful and had the crowd roaring with excitement. Most of the varsity teams sent in music and danced. All in all, a great deal of planning went into running the event. Throughout Spirit Week, EGO had each grade dressing up as a decade (Freshmen: 2000’s, Sophomores: 1990s, Juniors: 1980’s, Seniors: 1970s), soccer moms vs BBQ dads, Eastchester Spirit Day, and the fan favorite of pajama day. It was a great way to start off the school year and the next pep rally will be taking place in the spring!

FALL Blood Drive

  • Chairperson: Kendall Murtha

Eastchester High School once again gave blood to the Red Cross, this year with 35 people who were able to donate! It took place on Thursday, October 13th, in the cafeteria from 2:30 pm - 7:30 pm. Snacks and water were provided for the volunteers after they donated blood. Our EGO officers worked different desks, one at each of the entrances. They checked people in to make sure everything went according to plan and that there were no mix-ups. Some of our officers also volunteered to donate blood! All in all, 30 units of blood were collected and 90 lives were potentially saved!

EGO 22/23 Balloon Fundraiser

  • Over the course of two weeks (9/15-9/30)

  • Chairs: Cece Murray and Kevin Danaj

For the school year of 2022-2023, EGO put together a balloon fundraiser! The balloon package consisted of 3 balloons for $30 (red, white and blue) with ‘Soar’ written on one of the balloons, and ‘High’ written on the other. The third balloon had an eagle on it. Balloons were ordered through a system called, "ChedderUp", and student government put all the balloons together and delivered them to people's homes on September 27th. The main goal was to lift up the spirit in the town of Eastchester and to get everyone pumped for the Pep Rally. The only thing EGO would have changed is that since the balloons were a bit hard to work with and manage, next year they might work with something different. We raised a total of over $1,000 dollars! All in all, this fundraiser was very fun, and it was amazing to see the balloons outside everyone’s homes.

REAL KIDS WEAR PINK!

On October 21st, EHS decked out in pink for breast cancer awareness. EGO concentrated its promoted on the event and found that most of the student body participated. A total of $190 was collected and donated to the American Cancer Society. In doing so, EHS raised money for not only a tremendously important cause, but raised awareness for cancer research. RKWP is an event that is loved by many here at EHS, and students and teachers are looking forward to it again next year.

EHS Club Fair 2022

To promote clubs, activities and organizations, Eastchester High School held its club fair on September 15th. It took place in the upper gym during all lunch periods which range from periods 4-7. The success of the event centered around the significant turn out as well as the exposure of learning about new clubs. The club fair returned to its pre-Covid levels and there were a variety of clubs and organizations at the fair. For instance, there was student government and clubs such as poetry, business, mock trial, Italian, art, habitat for humanity and many more. All in all, it was a great way for students to interact and get more involved in the school community.
