Forensics at work

Ms. Bloshenko's Forensics class prepared a "banana autopsy" and put their knowledge of algor, livor and rigor mortis to use to determine the cause, manner and mechanism of death for each banana. Pictured below are shots from their forensic anthropology unit where they learned how to determine the biological profile (age, sex, height and ancestral background) of a person by looking for key features in their skeletal remains. Students are posing with a real skeleton in the picture!

wiffle ball was a homerun!

On June first, the tenth grade class hosted its second annual wiffleball tournament in support of the Play For 10 charity in memory of coach Dom Cecere.  Student teams were coached by teachers and all of the games were played on the turf.  The PTA and Sports Club hosted a food and snack table while raising an amazing amount of money.  Congratulations to Coach DeBellis's team as they successfully defended their title.

Ms. Sydlowski and Mr. Robinson's Art Accomplishments

Rachel Sydlowski, Invisible River at the Bronx Children's Museum

Take a trip to the Bronx Children's Museum where you will find Eastchester High School art teacher Rachel Sydlowkski’s site-specific art installation at the Bronx Children’s Museum called Invisible River. The installation brings to light the numerous plants, animals, and fish often hidden within the Bronx river. The piece consists of screen printing methods highlighted by Black light, illuminating the often unseen yet vibrant wildlife within the river. Be sure to check it out on your next visit. More work of Sydlowski’s can be found here.

Ms. Sydlowski is also involved in the Bronx Council for the Arts curating and organizing the Exhibition this Spring entitled “Process Reimagined- Building it Up to Tear it Down.” The exhibition consisted of works of 7 artists including 9 paintings by Matthew Robinson, an established artist and Eastchester High School Art Teacher. The Exhibition Connected the broad processes of making, evidence of labor, and the absence of the artist's hand by presenting a series of artworks across a range of mediums and disciplines.

In addition, this May, Mr. Robinson was one of 7 artists chosen as a finalist out of 400 artists who applied for the Alexander Rutcsh award at the Pelham Art Center. Furthermore, high school art teacher, Morgan de Rham, displayed her new work based on biodiversity in the group exhibition Nature Inspires at the Bartow Pell Mansion and Museum.

Finally, the metals and photo teacher, Patrick Perry who often exhibits his work throughout the tri-state area has created a new line of Jewelry that features stunning sterling silver earring, rings and necklaces in a minimalist design. You can check out his jewelry collection here.. All the art teachers at Eastchester High School enjoy bringing their professional expertise as artists into the classroom.

EHS Yearbook Hits new Highs with 2023 release

The Yearbook Club does something no other club does----they publish an extremely large book, (this year 240 pages!) between September and April.  What an amazing accomplishment!  On June 2nd after school, the long-awaited theme and cover, "Tuned In" was revealed at their annual party for the class of 2023.  The seniors (who have been out on their WISE internships) came back to school to see friends & faculty, reminisce, sign each other's books and have some low pressure time together before prom and graduation. They had fun while enjoying ice cream and quality time together.

News from the guidance department

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SUPPORTS FEEDING WESTCHESTER

This year’s 23 members of Eastchester’s Douglas MacDonald Chapter of NHS added to their traditional tutoring service by collecting funds and food to serve the larger community through Feeding Westchester. Members tutored 300 hours for EHS underclass students, and donated $1800+ funds and over 1100 pounds of food for Feeding Westchester and their affiliate, Hope Community Services/Saint Gabriel Church Soup Kitchen. Thank you, NHS members for supporting two essential needs in the community!

15 YEARS OF EXCELLENT SERVICE

Every day (for the last 15 years), students from Nora Flynn’s life skills program arrive at the EHS Guidance Office before school starts to sort Counselor passes, which Counselors use to send for their students. The volunteers then make their deliveries to homerooms throughout the building. Typically, an experienced student works with a new volunteer, but this year required Guidance to train 2 beginners, Jack and Jack. They quickly learned the ropes and did a great job demonstrating unwavering reliability, fantastic social skills, remarkable independence, excellent problem-solving abilities, and outstanding service to the department (and school). This year marks the first in 15 years with 100% daily coverage for the entire academic year. Thank you, Jacks!!

ego events from the spring

2023 Spring Spirit Week and Pep Rally

The Eastchester Eagles showed their spirit this spring season! One of the student favorite days was rocking out in their pajamas! Students dressed up in their favorite onesies, flannels, and sweatpants for a comfy day at school. Everyone outfitted tropical shirts and coconut tops for tropical Tuesday. A new addition this year was Jersey vs Jersey shore day where kids had the option to dress up in a team jersey or as a character from “Jersey Shore”. For toga Thursday, the eagles dressed up in togas or they came wrapped in their bedsheets! Friday was traditional color wars day with the freshman wearing red, sophomores wearing blue, juniors with green, and seniors repping their college merch or purple. On Friday EHS also had their spring pep rally, and this one was one to remember. Ryan Corrigon was the DJ and helped hype up the crowd for a good time. The pep rally had their traditional games like tug of war, rock-paper-scissors, and musical chairs. But, there were also some new additions like basketball tic-tac-toe and hungry hungry hippos. Everyone had a great time playing, so these games are sure to be brought back next year! The teams also came up with great dances, with flag football holding 1st place for the best one. At the end, there were prizes given to randomly chosen students who participated in dressing up for spirit week. All in all, it was a week to remember and the eagles can’t wait for next year!

                          Waverly Read Aloud

Eastchester High School's annual Waverly Read Aloud was a big success! Each year, EHS sends members from the Eastchester Government Organization to read a chosen book to the younger kids at Waverly. The children always look up to the high schoolers and it’s a good way for everyone to have fun and interact with each other. This year’s book was I’m Not Scared, You’re Scared by Seth Meyers. It was a story that revolved around bravery and friendship. EGO looks forward each year to visiting Waverly and getting to read to the kids and get to know them.

Rock Against Cancer 2023

This year’s Rock Against Cancer event was EHS’ biggest hit yet! The event raised $3,300 in total, and all proceeds will be going to the Sloan Memorial Kettering Center. But, this did not go without a ton of planning. To assure that many people would buy tickets, EGO made sure to promote, promote, and promote! There were announcements made during homeroom and all lunch periods, posters, social media posts, and even a video that was played during homeroom urging people to buy tickets or donate! There were several acts, from duets to bands, to even solo performances. The crowd enjoyed every bit of it and the show left everyone talking for days.

Pickleball Tournament

The annual pickleball tournament ran smoothly, thanks to the help of freshman EGO officers Leyla and Bear. It was an amazing success and there was a strong turnout of students. There were several teams that played each other and the winners were from the junior class, Selma and Martina. It was a tight competition and a close game. It was Leyla and Bear’s first time chairing an event, and it could not have gone better.
