WISE

The WISE Program is in full swing. In Module 1, students took 2 career tests and researched a career of their choice. In the 2nd module which was just completed, students learned about the importance of a visually pleasing and error free resume and went on to craft their own resumes. Individual meetings to place students in internships have begun and will continue through the spring. In a tight WISE "job" market, students are learning the importance of attending meetings, handing work in on time and leveraging personal contacts in increasing their prospects for a placement; just like in the real world.

EASTCHESTER SPORTS MEDICINE

March is the annual, "National Athletic Training Month", where athletic trainers around the country raise awareness surrounding the profession of athletic training and its importance for the safety of athletes and physically active individuals. This March, EHS Athletic Director, Tom Lehman and Patrick Kilcarr, are raising awareness with helmet decals that are to be worn by EHS football players for their altered season which was shifted to March/April. The decal is an outline of NYS with the athletic training logo embedded in the center. The push is to not only raise awareness for athletic trainers and their roles to keep athletes safe, but also to help push a legislative bill to change NYS to a licensure state for athletic training (NY is only 1 of 4 states not to be licensed which is the strictest form of professional protection). This all out effort is to help ensure safety for all athletes moving forward.

EGO

Holiday Decorating 2020

Holiday Decorating is an EGO tradition that centers around the winter holiday season. This year, EGO went all out and made the cafeteria look festive to cheer up the students and faculty. In an effort to make recycling a primary focus of the event, the majority of decorations were from year's past. When decorating a high traffic/popular area in the school, EGO officers wanted to represent and celebrate all December holidays. Co-chairs Ava Palladino and Danny Orlando were well prepared, making the event efficient and successful.

Overall, EGO collected $2300, 300 toys, $150 from gift cards, and 93 hats and scarves, for the annual toy drive, which was impressive given the quarantine circumstances. EGO brought some light to children that otherwise have had extremely difficult years, and all donations went towards the Nepperhan Community Center.

Stockings for Soldiers

December 2020

Every year EGO runs a “Stockings for Soldiers” event, where many stockings are filled with goodies for our soldiers overseas during the holidays. The stockings include toiletries, snacks, games, magazines, etc. Even under the circumstances this year, EGO was still able to put together one of the most successful Stockings for Soldiers events! A total of 71 stockings were filled and sent to our soldiers! Additionally, dog treats, toys and food were collected for our canines overseas! Happy Holidays from EGO!!

GLOBAL CRAFTS AND WEST AFRICAN CULTURE

Global Crafts is currently learning about Western African culture, specifically the Ashanti people who make Adinkra Cloths. Adinkra Cloths are hand-printed fabrics with various symbols developed by the Ashanti people. This technique was traditionally made for royalty to wear at religious ceremonies. Throughout the years, people have also decorated Adinkra cloths to tell a story or to express their thoughts or feelings. Students were asked to create a symbol based on their identity, carve out the symbols and print it in cloth in a creative pattern.

JAZZ CO., A WEEKEND OF DANCE, IS BACK!

After rigorous weeks of hard work, dedication, and of course, dancing, Jazz Co. is finally proud to announce that we will be premiering our yearly showcase on Friday, March 5th at 7:00pm. This year has challenged our dancers, choreographers, and staff, but we have come together as a community to create a show to make the best out of it all. Jazz Co. has learned the difficulties of dancing apart and creating a production through zoom, but we have come out of it all stronger. With only eleven rehearsals, ten virtual and one in-person and outdoors, Jazz Co. has crafted an exciting production that is full of movement and fun, as well as safety.

The staff has worked long and hard not only to put together a performance like never before, but also ensure that we follow COVID-19 guidelines to keep all members healthy. All rehearsals as well as the show recording were either virtual or socially distanced. The safety of our community comes first to Jazz Co., so this year’s show displays not only our passions on the dance floor, but our passions for being responsible dancers and citizens.

Our performance this year, just as any other, showcases various styles of dance, from ballet to belly-dancing to African. With our director Karen Zambelli-Gwardyak and our African dance teacher, Marion Archer retiring this year, Jazz Co.’s display of their genius choreography will be exhibited and praised one last time.

Although this was a very bittersweet year, full of change and unfamiliarity, it has strengthened our bonds as one big dancing family, and we could not have put on a show without our love for dance. Regardless of any curve balls thrown at All Jazz Co., we keep on dancing. Our amazingly creative and socially-distanced show will be broadcasted on March 5th, and we invite you to celebrate our community’s and Jazz Co.'s greatness and resilience, but mostly our devotion to dance.

Jazz Co.

After months of Zoom and outdoor rehearsals,

Jazz Co. proudly presents the 37th annual Weekend of Dance!

Join us on Friday March 5th at 7:00 PM

Free tickets are available through Eventbrite:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/142899063947

Cablevision channel 78 and on Verizon Fios channel 24

Please help us to celebrate Karen Zambelli-Gwardyak as she retires after 27 years with Jazz Co, including 11 as the Director. We will miss you Karen! You have inspired a love of dance for generations of Eastchester students.

Outdoor rehearsals at their finest!

“A School Who Bakes Together, Stays Together”- Breadmaking Request for Staff and EHS Community

Last spring, a silver lining of the lockdown was time spent at home baking with family. It became so popular that yeast, the active ingredient in fresh bread, was impossible to locate at the supermarkets. As a welcome change to state testing, Mrs. Lockwood offered students an authentic assessment of baking bread with their family to explore the science behind anaerobic fermentation. The responses were phenomenal: pretzel rolls, sandwich bread, rosemary bread, yeast rolls, Hawaiian rolls, challah bread, focaccia, olive bread, French brioche, garlic knots, melon bread, ciabatta, artisan bread, and more! Even Dr. Blair got in on the baking and tried a Sourdough bread (a little extra challenging because it requires a starter). Students attached pictures of themselves baking and their final product, as well as linked their recipes to a Google slides presentation.

Due to the success of the assignment, Mrs. Lockwood would like to continue this class tradition, while extending the invitation to the EHS staff and community. With life not really back to “normal”, this is an opportunity to do something with family members to pass the time. Mrs. Lockwood's requests:

  1. Select a bread recipe that involves yeast and send me the link to the recipe and/or a JPEG/PDF of it.

  2. Take a picture of you with the finished bread after baking (will be shown to students as they love to see their teachers and community doing non-teaching/parenting activities).

  3. Enjoy the carbohydrates and time spent with family!

The bread, along with the pictures are due by Friday, March 12th (around the time where Mrs. Lockwood begins to teach that topic).
